Princeton, N.J. - The University of Pennsylvania men's fencing team traveled to Princeton on Saturday for the Ivy Round Robins. The Quakers came out on a mission as they took down the number one men's fencing team, Harvard 15-12 to begin their quest for a third straight Ivy title.
The men remain undefeated but will have their hands full on Sunday. The Red and Blue will have four bouts including two against No. 2 Columbia and No. 5 Princeton.
How it Happened
The Quakers began their quest for a three-peat against the nation's top men's fencing squad and Ivy rival, Harvard. For Penn it was epee that came up big on the season's biggest stage. Seniors
Zsombor Garzo and
Jake Raynis each used their experience to their advantage. The trio all went 3-0 as epee swept Harvard 9-0. The win marked the fourth straight year that epee earned a victory over Harvard and just the fourth time this season that they won by the score of 9-0.
Epee came up big when the team needed it most. Foil fell for the third time in four bouts after being 25-2 prior to last weekend. They fell 4-5 with
John Vaiani going 2-1. Men's saber fell 7-2.
Julian Merchant and
Andrew Sun earned the two wins in saber.
