Women's Basketball Earns 66-43 Win at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team won its second straight on Saturday, moving to 6-2 on the year after a 66-43 road victory at Iona.

PENN NEWS AND NOTES
*Eleah Parker led the way with her fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance, netting 18 points with 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Defensively, the sophomore swatted five shots, a new career best.

*The senior pair of Princess Aghayere and Ashley Russell joined Parker in double-figure scoring, as Aghayere finished with 13 and Russell had a strong fourth quarter to end with 10. Aghayere flirted with a double-double, collecting nine rebounds, while Russell added six rebounds and five assists.

*Penn outrebounded its opponent for the third-straight game, dominating the glass 43-25. 17 of Penn's rebounds were on the offensive end, resulting in 16 second-chance points.

*Turnovers have plagued Penn at points this season, but Saturday's nine turnovers are the lowest this year for the Red and Blue. In turn, the Quakers converted Iona's 18 turnovers into 21 points.

*Phoebe Sterba tied her career high, set earlier this season, with four assists.

*Penn's has held its opponents to 47 points or less for three-straight games for the first time since the end of the regular season in 2017.

*Penn improves to 2-1 all-time against Iona in the first meeting between the two schools since 1982.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn shot out quickly, making it a priority to force turnovers and run in transition as much as possible, resulting in a quick 8-2 lead. Defensively, Parker made her presence known from the opening tip with blocks in the paint in the first quarter. This forced the Gaels to go outside, where they found success from deep. Fortunately for the Quakers, so did they, as Kendall Grasela and Phoebe Sterba went back-to-back from deep, making it 18-11 after the first quarter.

Iona continued to linger around, using another 3-pointer to open the second period. Penn responded with a 7-0 run, igniting Parker down low, but it was again the Gaels from deep to keep them in shouting distance. At halftime, the Quakers held a 39-27 lead as both teams were shooting over 50 percent, while Parker and Sterba led eight scorers from Penn with eight points each.

A 7-2 run to open the third quarter gave Penn its largest lead of the game at 17, following a 3-pointer from Aghayere. In fact, Aghayere teamed up with Parker for seven of Penn's nine points in the period. The Quakers went scoreless the final 3:33 of the quarter, allowing Iona another mini 5-0 run to make it a 13-point game with 10 minutes to go.

The Quakers pressed hard on the gas pedal to end the game, going back to how they began with forced turnovers and run outs on offense. Parker was tough to beat, and the Penn defense locked down late, sealing a 66-43 win at the final buzzer.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers will take a nearly two-week break from competition for finals, before resuming play with the Battle of 33rd Street at Drexel on Friday, Dec. 21 at 11:30 a.m.
