HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL. – The 56th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships came to a close with a trio of Quakers coming up one match short of the podium after a grueling tournament.
 
No. 10 seed Carmen Ferrante (125 pounds), Doug Zapf (133 pounds) and Jake Hendricks (174 pounds) each advanced as far as the Round of 12, but were denied in the "blood round".
 
Ferrante was edged by Indiana's Elijah Oliver, 3-2, a first-period takedown from Oliver the difference.
 
At 133, Zapf scored first against No. 9 seed Josiah Kline of Arizona State but a second-period takedown followed by four nearfall points set the stage for Kline's rally.
 
Hendricks also had an early lead after a first-period takedown of No. 9 seed Willie Scott of Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knight scored two quick nearfall to start the third period and would go on to ride the remainder of the frame for a 3-2 decision.
 
11 of Penn's 18 wrestlers on at least one match at the tournament, including four freshmen and four others who recorded their first career Midlands victories.
 
Penn is back in dual meet competition January 6 at Duke. The match with the Blue Devils starts at 3 p.m. EST.
