How it Happened
The Quakers entered the final weekend of Ivy League play looking to finish the season with some momentum. After winning their last two at home, and a long Ivy road trip Penn was glad to be back at The Palestra for the first time in 28 days.
Head coach
Iain Braddak always talks about the grit of his team and his team showed plenty of it on Friday afternoon. The Red and Blue went down 7-3 early on and trailed by as much as six in the middle of the first set. Down 15-9, the Quakers finally got going. A 5-1 run led by
Parker Jones,
Raven Sulaimon, and
Madison Goldstein pulled the team back within striking distance, but the Big Green pulled away taking a 20-15 lead late.
Just three points away from going down 1-0,
Brooke Behrbaum and Sulaimon sparked the biggest run of the first set. The Quakers won six straight points to take a 24-22 lead. Behrbaum and Sulaimon then closed out the set by teaming up for a block, giving Penn the 25-23 early victory.
Penn once again fell behind early in the second. The Quakers went down by as much as nine, trailing 14-5 after the set's first 19 points. With two kills from Jones as a part of a 6-1 run, the Red and Blue fought back to 15-11. Behind 23-21 late, kills by Behrbaum, Goldstein, and and ace from
Grace James gave Penn set point. An error from Dartmouth and the Quakers took the second set by the same score as the first, 25-23, to go up 2-0.
The third set was unlike the first and second in the sense that Penn was in control throughout. The Quakers started by taking the first five points and went on to lead 14-4. The Red and Blue led by as much as 11, but Dartmouth pulled back within eight at 21-13. Penn closed out the match with Sulaimon's 12th kill of the afternoon to take the set 25-15 and complete the sweep of the Big Green.
