Women's Basketball Opens Season at Siena

PHILADELPHIA -  It's tipoff time!

A new season is dawning for the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, as the Quakers open things up on the road for the third-straight season, facing Siena on Saturday, Nov. 10. On the line for Penn is a 1-0 record for the first time since 2011 as Head Coach Mike McLaughlin rolls out a new-look team for the Red and Blue.

In the Series vs. Siena: Third Meeting
Saturday's game is just the third all-time between Siena and Penn, and the first since December of 2001. In fact, the Quakers and the Saints battled twice that calendar year, with Penn winning the matchup on the road in January of the 2000-01 season, 88-79, before Siena enacted revenge at The Palestra during the 2001-02 season, 73-65.

Catching the Game: Siena All-Access
Fans can watch Saturday's game on Siena's All-Access stream. In-game Twitter updates and video can be found at @PennWBB. A complete recap, box score and highlights can be found on PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of the game.

Against the MAAC
Coach McLaughlin is 4-2 all-time against opponents from the MAAC, with his last meeting against the league coming in the second round of the WBI in 2013, a 49-48 victory for the Quakers. McLaughlin has won his last three meetings against the MAAC.

2017-18 Season Recap
- The Quakers posted their fifth-straight 20+ win season last year, going 22-9 overall and finishing second in the Ivy League with a conference record of 11-3. After advancing to the Ivy League Tournament Championship for the second-straight season, Penn earned a spot in the postseason for the sixth year in a row, playing in the WNIT. There, the Red and Blue won their fourth postseason game in school history before falling to St. John's in the second round.
- In addition to a strong finish in the Ivy League, Penn captured its second Big 5 Championship in program history, going 3-1 against in-city foes with wins over Saint Joseph's, Villanova and Temple. Penn's 10 non-conference victories were its second-most in a season in program history.
- Penn graduated a record-breaking four-woman senior class in Beth Brzozowski, Michelle Nwokedi, Anna Ross and Lauren Whitlatch. Both Nwokedi and Ross featured All-Ivy campaigns their senior seasons.

Scouting the Saints
Like Penn, Siena will hit the hardcourt for the first time on Saturday to open its season. The Saints went 17-14 overall last year, finishing third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a mark of 11-7. Siena returns four of its top-six scorers and was picked to finish third yet again in the MAAC, with two Preseason All-MAAC honorees in Maddie Sims and Aaliyah Jones.

Season Openers
The Quakers are in search of their first season-opening win since a 70-61 victory in overtime to start the 2011-12 campaign over St. Francis (Brooklyn) at The Palestra. A win on Saturday would be Penn's first season-opening triumph on the road since 2007 at Elon.

Returning Rookie of the Year
Penn's most decorated returner for the 2018-19 season is sophomore center Eleah Parker. Parker put together a monstrous season her freshman year, heralded as the unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year, as well as the Big 5 Rookie of the Year. The Charlotte, N.C. native averaged 11.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game, starting all 31 contests last season.

Leading the Way
Senior guards Kristen Daley, Deja Jackson and Ashley Russell were selected to lead the squad as team captains for the 2018-19 season.

Preseason Poll
Penn was picked to finish second this season in the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, totaling 107 votes with two first place nods. The Quakers have been selected either first or second in the preseason poll in six-straight years, and have received first place votes each of those years. Defending champion Princeton was picked to repeat, while Harvard and Yale rounded out the top half of the league.

Mid-Major Respect
The Quakers enter the year ranked 21st in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll. Penn is one of two Ivy League teams represented in the poll (Princeton), and is set to square off against five teams currently receiving votes (Princeton, Drexel, Maine, Navy and Stetson).

Non-Conference Success
Prior to Coach McLaughlin, the Quakers had won nine non-league games only once in program history, but have done so in five of the last six years. Last year's Penn team posted the third-most non-league wins in program history with nine.

Magic Number: 60
The statistic that may most indicate a Penn win or loss? 60 points. Penn has won 84 of its last 85 regular season games when scoring at least 60 points. Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over at Penn, the Quakers are 115-11 (.913) when they reach that number (87-3 over the last four seasons). In comparison, the Quakers are just 40-98 (.290) when they've scored less than 60 points under Coach McLaughlin. The trend continues defensively. Over the last seven seasons, the Red and Blue are 29-52 (.358) when allowing 60 points or more. But when holding opponents under that number, the Quakers hold a healthy winning record of 124-31 (.800).

Can't Get to 5-0? It's a No-Go.
The Quakers have won 58-straight games when holding their opponents to 49 points or less. The last time a team defeated the Quakers despite being held under 50 points was January 16, 2013, a 48-44 loss to Big 5 rival Villanova.

#RoadToIvyMadness
The Ivy League is in its third season with a conference tournament, inviting the regular season's top-four finishers to Ivy Madness. The Quakers have advanced to the championship game in each of the first two editions of the competition, winning the trophy in 2017 at The Palestra. This season, Ivy Madness is set for March 16-17, 2019 at Yale's John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn.
