EAST LANSING, Mich. – A new era of Penn Wrestling was expected to be on display as the Quakers opened 2018-19 at the Michigan State Open, and Penn's No. 12-ranked recruiting class did not disappoint.
All nine freshmen in the lineup won at least one match, and rookie
Anthony Artalona made his Penn debut a memorable one with a championship at 149 pounds.
Competing in the Open Division against veteran collegiate wrestlers, Artalona won four matches en route to the title. He opened his collegiate career with a 21-4 technical fall over Indiana's Breyden Bailey. Up next was Harvard's A.J. Jaffe. Artalona dispatched the two-time All-Ivy wrestler who was fifth at last year's EIWA Championships, 9-3, to reach the semifinals. Artalona was tested most in his semifinal match, but downed a strong McCoy Kent of Northern Illinois, 6-3. In the final Artalona scored early and added a late takedown to pull away from Michigan's Ben Lamantia, 6-3.
Also placing in the Open Division was freshman
Carmen Ferrante at 125 pounds. He posted a 4-2 record in his first collegiate tournament to finish fifth. After a loss to Michigan State's RayVon Foley in his first match, Ferrante won three straight – each a bonus point win. He capped his day with a 5-3 win over Northwestern's Michael DeAugustino in the fifth place match.
A pair of Quakers placed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
Greg Bensley opened his Penn Wrestling career with a sixth place run at 197 pounds, while sophomore
Ryan Farber was sixth at 184.
