Two-Game Navy Classic Awaits Women's Basketball in Annapolis

PHILADELPHIA - With the Thanksgiving holiday in the rearview, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team hopes to keep its momentum and gobble up a pair of wins at the Navy Classic, facing the host Midshipmen on Saturday, Nov. 24 before battling Maine on Sunday.

In the Series vs. Navy: 10th Meeting
The Quakers have faced off against the Mids nine times in program history, with Navy holding the slim 5-4 advantage. Penn has won two-straight against Navy, behind wins in both 2014 and 2015. The Quakers' 60-51 victory in 2014 was their first road win against the Mids, and Coach McLaughlin is 2-1 against the squad.

In the Series vs. Maine: Second Meeting
Penn and Maine have met just once before, facing off in Coach McLaughlin's second season: December of 2010. There, Penn tallied a 21-point win at The Palestra.

Catching the Game: Patriot League Network
Saturday's game can be watched live on the Patriot League Network. In-game Twitter updates and video can be found at @PennWBB. A complete recap, box score and highlights can be found on PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of both games.

Last Time Out: W, 85-42 vs. NJIT (Nov. 17, 2018)
   -  The Quakers tallied their largest win against a Division I team in since 1981 last time out, behind a career day from senior captain Ashley Russell, who finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Head of the Pack
Senior captain Ashley Russell has emerged as the heart and soul both on and off the court for the Quakers this season, leading the team in points, rebounds and assists.

After dominating performances in Penn's games at Notre Dame and against Saint Joseph's and NJIT, Russell was named Big 5 Player of the Week. She averaged 17 points, over six rebounds and four assists in the three contests for the Quakers.

In-Season Tournaments
This is Penn's sixth appearance in an in-season tournament or classic since Mike McLaughlin took over in 2009-10. To end the calendar year in 2012, the Quakers defeated both Alabama State and Air Force at the Iowa State Cyclone Challenge. The previous year, Penn split contests against UNC-Greensboro and San Diego State at the San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic, while in McLaughlin's first year the Quakers traveled to Evanston, Ill. for the Mildred and Roger L. White Doubletree Invitational. Last season, the Quakers traveled to Bimini, Bahamas to compete in the Junkanoo Jam over Thanksgiving break, dropping the opening game to Georgia Tech before rallying from 18-points down to defeat Missouri State in the third-place matchup.

Magic Number: 60
The statistic that may most indicate a Penn win or loss? 60 points. Penn has won 86 of its last 87 regular season games when scoring at least 60 points. Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over at Penn, the Quakers are 117-11 (.914) when they reach that number (89-3 over the last four seasons). In comparison, the Quakers are just 41-99 (.292) when they've scored less than 60 points under Coach McLaughlin. The trend continues defensively. Over the last seven seasons, the Red and Blue are 29-53 (.354) when allowing 60 points or more. But when holding opponents under that number, the Quakers hold a healthy winning record of 127-31 (.804).

Can't Get to 5-0? It's a No-Go.
The Quakers have won 60-straight games when holding their opponents to 49 points or less. The last time a team defeated the Quakers despite being held under 50 points was January 16, 2013, a 48-44 loss to Big 5 rival Villanova.

Defensively Consistent
Penn has held its opponents to 68 points or less in 95 of its past 100 games. The lone games over that mark since Feb. 14, 2015 were last season and earlier this season at Notre Dame.

Scouting the Mids
Navy enters the weekend at 1-2 on the year, with losses to Marist and Norfolk State. Two players average double figure scoring for the Mids, including Jennifer Coleman and Kolbi Green. Like Penn, Navy advanced to the WNIT a season ago and was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League.

Scouting the Black Bears
Currently rated 13th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25, Maine owns a 2-2 record heading into the Navy Classic and will play North Carolina A&T prior to facing the Quakers. After wins over Toledo and Bryant to start the year, the Black Bears fell by three to #20 Duke before a 31-point loss to Green Bay last time out. The defending America East champion, Maine was picked to repeat atop the league this season and is led by over 19 points per game from Blanca Millan.

Against the Patriot League
Coach McLaughlin is 11-6 all-time against members of the Patriot League. He has won four straight against the conference, which includes a win over Navy in 2015.

Against the America East
Coach McLaughlin is 6-2 all-time against the America East, with both losses coming in the last two seasons to Binghamton.
