Volleyball Swept By Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The University Of Pennsylvania volleyball team (5-17, 2-9 Ivy) fell to Cornell on Friday night on the road, 3-0. The Quakers began their final road trip of the season this weekend as they wrap up on Saturday against Columbia (5 p.m.). 

Inside the Numbers - Box Score

* Penn had 27 kills to Cornell's 42. 

* The Red and Blue were out-hit .183 to .273

* Only Raven Sulaimon recorded more than five kills. The sophomore led the team with six and now has over 100 kills in Ivy League play this season. 

* Taylor Cooper was once again strong at the net. The senior tallied four blocks giving her 70 on the season. Her 70 blocks are the second most in the past five seasons. 

* Caroline Furrer had eight digs on the night. It's just the fifth time this season that she's had less than 10. 

How it Happened

A 6-0 run lead put the Quakers down 10-4 early in the first set. The Big Red continued to pull away as Penn fell 25-16 in the first to go down 1-0. The Red and Blue went down 10-7 in the second, but a 5-0 run sparked by a Sulaimon kill and ace by Furrer put Penn up 13-11. Cornell took back the lead with a 5-1 run as the Quakers went down 17-15 late. Penn was unable to comeback, losing the final three points of the set to fall 25-19 and 2-0 overall. 

A 7-2 run followed by another 5-0 run put the Big Red up 18-9 in the third set. The Quakers didn't quit as they brought the score back within six with kills from Parker Jones and Grace James. A kill from the Big Red closed out the set 25-18 as Penn fell 3-0 on the road. 

What's next

The Quakers play their final road match against Columbia on Saturday at 5 p.m. Head coach Iain Braddack returns to New York City for the first time since joining Penn.
