How It Happened
Penn got off to a fast start on Monday night, scoring the game's first eight points and 10 of the first 11. However, it did not take Oregon State (4-1) long to make up the deficit, as the Beavers scored 13 of 15 points to turn it around from 12-3 down to 15-14 up. The teams played evenly the rest of the period, and OSU took a 31-29 lead into halftime when
Devon Goodman got caught down low and his pass outside was picked off by Tres Tinkle who dunked it at the other end just ahead of the buzzer.
Â
Just as Penn started the first half quickly, Oregon State did even better to start the second. The Beavers scored the first 13 points of the period to up their lead to 44-29, before a
Jackson Donahue three-pointer from the top of the key finally broke the Quakers' skid. That seemed to spark Penn, and the Quakers kept pressing until they were within five points (50-45) when
Antonio Woods hit a layup. The Red and Blue had another defensive stop, but Brodeur missed a layup and then Tinkle sparked a seven-point run to push OSU back in front by 12.
Â
Penn got five of the points back, Woods hitting a layup and Silpe knocked down a three-pointer, but Tinkle responded with his own trey and then Ethan Thompson hit from downtown to push the Beavers back in front by 13. As it turned out, Silpe's trey—which came with 8:01 left—was Penn's final field goal until
Eddie Scott tipped in a putback with just 40 seconds left. In the meantime, Oregon State had built its lead up to 21 points before the final settled on 16.
