EASTON - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team was upset on the road after a pair of second half goals gave Lafayette (5-9) a 2-1 victory over Penn.
The Quakers started the game and immediately began piling pressure on the Lafayette defense.
Rachel Mirkin had two shots saved on back to back corners within the first ten minutes.
Penn found an early breakthrough minutes later.
Erin Kelly broke into the circle and fired a backhanded shot across the goal and in. The goal was Kelly's third of the season.
The Red and Blue continued to mount pressure on the Leopards' defense.
Paige Meily forced a save on the Quakers' third corner of the game. Later,
Jordyn Thies is found in the circle and forces a Lafayette defender to make a defensive save.
Penn entered the half with a 6-1 advantage on shots, with four shots on target.Â
The Quakers came out in the second half with the same offensive urgency. Penn earned its sixth corner of the game three minutes into the half, but Meily's pass to Kelly at the near post was intercepted by a Lafayette defender.Â
Lafayette earned their first corner of the game in the 42nd minute. The sick stopper collected the ball at the top of the circle and passed to a player on the left side of the box. The player shot low to the far post to level the score.
Minutes later, Lafayette doubled the lead with an identical shot from the left side to the far post.Â
Penn searched for an equalizer as the game wore on, and nearly leveled the score on three occasions.
Julia Russo had a shot blocked on the Quakers eighth corner of the game, and
Alexa Schneck hit the post off their ninth corner. With three minutes to go, Russo was through on goal, but the defender forced her shot off the post.Â
The Quakers return home on Friday to resume Ivy League action as they welcome Columbia to Ellen Vagelos Field at 3:30 p.m.
