Series Information
Records: Tied at 33-33-6 | Last meeting: 2017 (Columbia, 3-0)
The Lions and Quakers are knotted in their all-time series, with each side boasting 33 wins to their names, on top of six draws. Penn is seeking its first victory over Columbia since 2011, as the Lions have won five straight, including back-to-back 3-0 results against the Quakers. Last year, Penn ran into a ranked Columbia team and was unable to notch a goal in New York. Columbia's last visit to Rhodes Field featured a heartbreaking result for Penn, as the Quakers fell 2-1 in double overtime, on a penalty kick with just seconds remaining in the match.
Regulation Not Enough
For the first time in program history, six of Penn's first seven matches of the season have gone into overtime, as the Quakers routinely find themselves knotted even with their opponents after 90 minutes. Penn has picked up at least a point in all of its overtime bouts but one, last weekend's 1-0 defeat in the 103rd minute at Cornell.
Scott Makes Saves
Senior goalkeeper
Scott Forbes is in the midst of his most successful season between the pipes for the Quakers, currently ranked fifth in the country in save percentage, collecting 88 percent of shots faced. His goals against average of 0.629 is good for second in the Ivy League and 15th in the nation, while the New Jersey native averages 5.29 saves per game, ranking eighth in the country. Penn's four shutouts on the year are the most for the Quakers since 2013.
Going the Distance
In addition to Forbes, Penn's back four of
Casey Barone,
Erumuse Momoh,
Alex Touche and
RC Williams have played all 715 minutes and change on the field for the Red and Blue, helping provide defensive stability that has translated into results for the team. Penn has allowed nine fewer goals than at this point last year.
Quakers Go4TheGoal
The Quakers have partnered with Go4TheGoal throughout the season, helping to fundraise in the fight against pediatric cancer. On Saturday, Penn will lace up with gold shoelaces, a visual component of Go4TheGoal's mission to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial support, developing and implementing unique hospital programs, funding innovative research, and granting personal wishes. Scouting the Lions
Columbia enters Saturday's contest with an overall record of 4-3-1, and a 1-0 mark in the Ivy League following a 3-1 victory over Brown last weekend. The Lions have faced a tough schedule, with their three losses coming at Kentucky, at #25 Fordham and at Pitt. Penn and Columbia share one common opponent on the year in Monmouth, as both sides defeated the Hawks by a one-goal margin. Columbia earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament a year ago and was picked to finish second in the Ivy League this season.
