Field Hockey Picks Up Senior Day Win over Brown, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team moved to 5-1 in Ivy League play after a 1-0 victory over Brown on senior day.

Game Notes
*Penn moved to 5-1 in Ivy League play and are tied with Princeton for second in the conference standings.

*The Quakers posted their fourth shutout against an Ivy League opponent this season, the most of any team in the conference.

*Rachel
Mirkin scored her fourth goal of the season, and third game winning goal of the season.

How it Happened
The Quakers wasted no time getting on the board. In the third minute, Penn earned a corner. Kelsey Mendell inserted the ball and found Alexa Schneck, who's shot was saved. Sofia Palacios jumped on the rebound, but her shot was blocked.  The ball then fell to Mirkin who tucked the ball away and gave Penn the lead.

The Quakers continued to pepper the Brown goal for the remainder of the game. Karen Seid got a shot off at the top of the circle which was blocked, then Mendell got off a shot shortly afterwards and
it too was blocked.

In the
15th minute, Penn went close to doubling its lead. On the third corner of the game, Erin Kelly inserted, and the ball found Julia Russo, who's shot was saved. The rebound found its way to Palacios, who's shot was saved, and then Schneck, who's shot was also saved.

The Quakers entered halftime with a 19-2 advantage on shots, but still led Brown 1-0.

The second half saw much of the same. Schneck found space after a brilliant turn in the circle and fired a shot towards the top corner of the goal, but the Brown keeper reacted well to make the save.

Russo and Meily later forced two saves from two different Penn corners.

The Quakers were unable to double their lead in the second half after forcing eight saves on 12 shots. Their stout defense, however, ensured the victory.

Penn did not allow Brown a single shot in the second half. The Quakers finished the game, outshooting Brown 31-2.
Ava Rosati earned her fifth shutout of the season, and fourth in Ivy League games. She leads Ivy League goalkeepers in shutouts from conference play.

The Red and Blue will play their final regular season game this season next Saturday as the Quakers travel to Princeton for a showdown with the Tigers at noon.
