PHILADELPHIA – After a two-week trip across the country during Penn's Winter Break, the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team is back on the road this weekend to compete at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Saturday before an EIWA dual at Army West Point on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Quakers (4-3) are coming off a successful trip to the Midlands Championships where Penn placed three on the podium and put together its best team finish since 2003 with a ninth-place fun. The Red and Blue followed that up with a split of dual meets in California, defeating Cal Poly before suffering a one-point loss to host Stanford.
Notes To Know…
- Penn is 12-13-3 all-time in dual meets against Army West Point. The Quakers are 3-2 against the Black Knights since the series resumed in 2008 after a 28-year hiatus.
- The last time the two teams met in West Point was during the 2015-16 season when Penn defeated Army West Point, 24-12.
- Last year, the Quakers were defeated by the Black Knights, 18-14, in The Palestra. Penn held a 7-6 lead after four matches, but Army West Point won four in a row from 285-141 pounds to build an 18-7 lead.
- The only likely rematch from last year's dual will come at 197 pounds where No. 10 Frank Mattiace will wrestle Army's Rocco Caywood. Mattiace scored the only takedown of the match with 0:02 remaining in the first period to provide the difference.
- Mattiace leads all Quakers this season in wins (17) and pins (7).
- Mattiace is tied for No. 10 in the nation in pinfall victories.
- Mattiace is 5-1 in dual meets, tied with Gianni Ghione for the team lead in dual meet points with 23.
- Ghione is 4-2 in dual meets, with three pins and a technical fall win.
- No. 17 Joe Heyob is 6-0 in dual meets this season, scoring 21 team points.
