Men's Soccer Settles For 1-1 Draw Against Cornell

PHILADELPHIA -
 A 19th minute goal from junior Jerel Blades led the way on offense for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team in a 1-1 Ivy League opening draw at home against Cornell. The result gives the Quakers one point in the Ancient Eight after the first weekend of action.

KEY MOMENTS 
*Early game action favored the home team, as Penn totaled three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes alone.

*The game's first shot resulted in the game's first goal, as freshman Jake Kohlbrenner connected on a feed to senior Joe Swenson streaking in the penalty who sent a shot toward's the Cornell goalkeeper. The goalie was able to get a hand on it, but sent the ball straight to the foot of Jerel Blades who finished high for a 1-0 Penn lead.

*Sophomore Dami Omitaomu nearly made it a 2-0 advantage in the 30th minute, sending a ball towards the crossbar.

*In the second half, the Big Red amped up the pressure, controlling more of the run of play before finally breaking through in the 77th minute on a goal from Caleb McAuslan.

*Cornell's Charles Touche had a solid look at goal in the 84th minute, but it was collected by goalkeeper Etan Mabourakh who finished with six saves on the night.

*After 90 minutes, play remained at 1-1, sending Penn into its first overtime game of the year.

*The Quakers were unable to get a shot off in either of the overtime periods, but Mabourakh held strong for the defense collecting two saves to preserve the 1-1 draw.

PENN NOTES
*The goal from Blades was the third of his career and the first since October of 2015 against Yale.

*The assist for Swenson was the sixth of his career for the Red and Blue, while Kohlbrenner's was his first.

*The Quakers now own a five-year unbeaten streak against the Big Red.

*Penn ended the game getting outshot 17-7 after winning that category in the first half 5-3. The Quakers collected six saves to Cornell's two.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Penn will take a brief break from Ivy League play with a midweek tilt at Delaware on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Ancient Eight action resumes next Sunday, Oct. 8 at Columbia.
