NEWARK, Del. - It all came together for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team on Wednesday night, as the Quakers clicked on offense from the opening whistle to soar to a 3-1 victory over Delaware on the road. The win over the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions improves Penn's record to 2-6-1 (0-0-1, Ivy) on the year.
KEY MOMENTS
*It didn't take long for the Red and Blue to grab the lead at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, as
Jerel Blades sent the game's first shot into the back of the net on a cross into the box from senior captain
Sam Wancowicz.
*The Blue Hens would respond with a pair of shots in the succeeding minutes, both from Carlos Perales, but Penn escaped the first 20 minutes with no opposing scoring threat.
*
Jake Kohlbrenner notched the Quakers' second shot of the night in the 22nd minute, forcing a save from the UD goalkeeper Todd Morton.
*Delaware would again increase their offensive attack in the waning minutes of the first period, before Penn struck gold on yet another pass from Wancowicz, this time to fellow defender
Erumuse Momoh. Momoh found the back of the net with one single tick of the clock remaining, giving the Quakers a 2-0 lead at halftime.
*Penn's shutout would be short-lived out of the break, as the Blue Hens burst out of the locker room with a goal of their own in the 48th minute from Mark Battle, cutting the Quaker lead in half.
*The Red and Blue didn't allow Delaware to seize any momentum after the score however, responding with a barrage of shots of their own.
*Beginning in the 67th minute, Penn's offensive attack upped the ante with three shots in three minutes, including a shot off the post from
Promise Adebayo-Ige. The action concluded with the Blue Hens getting called for a foul in the box, giving
Joe Swenson a penalty kick opportunity that he would not miss. The senior connected, giving the Quakers a 3-1 lead.
*The Quakers avoided any serious threats from Delaware in the final moments of the contest, with goalkeeper
Scott Forbes earning his second save in the 81st minute. The whistle blew with Penn on top, 3-1.
