Volleyball Loses in Four Sets to Yale

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team (5-6, 0-2 Ivy) lost their second Ivy Leauge match and first meeting to Yale in four sets, 3-1. The Quakers showed fight until the end as they lost a close second set 25-22 before winning the third set 25-23. Penn fell behind in the fourth set and were unable to recover. The Red and Blue are now 0-2 in Ivy League play after losing to both Princeton and Yale. They will look to get in the win column Saturday night as they travel to Rhode Island to take on Brown.

Inside the Numbers

* Parker Jones finished with double digit kills as she hit a team-high 12 to contribute to her 13.5 points on the night.
* While also leading the team in assists with 34, Sydney Morton also finished with a season high five kills and team high .714 hit percentage. She aso lead the team with 14 digs.
* The Quakers were out-hit in three of the four sets, winning the only set  in which they hit better than Yale. Penn finished with a .168 hit percentage while Yale bested that with a .288.
* Penn falls to 0-2 after their first two Ivy League games.

How it Happened

The Quakers managed to keep the match close to start, but after Yale sprinted away on a 6-0 run, Penn was unable to recover. A 4-0 run by the Bulldogs capped off the opening set 25-15. The second set was much closer than the first with neither team gaining much separation. The Quakers took a lead at 9-8, but were unable to hold it. A 3-0 run to put Yale up 21-18 was just enough for the Quakers to lose the second set 25-22 and go down two sets to none.

Much like they have all season, the Red and Blue showed fight and wouldn't go away easy. Coming out of the locker room at the half, Yale looked like they were going to run away with the match as Penn fell down 11-6, however, that was not the case. Earning her first kill of the season, freshman Raven Sulaimon sparked a 3-0 run to tie the set at 14-14. Sulaimon assisted a kill by Sydney Morton to give the Quakers their first lead in the set since being up 2-1. A kill by Hayley Molnar gave Penn a set point and with an error from Yale, the Red and Blue took the third set.

Much like the third set, Yale got off to a fast start in the fourth going up 9-3, however, unlike the third, the Quakers were unable to come back as the Bulldogs won the clinching set 25-13.

What's Next

The Quakers travel to Rhode Island to take on Brown who is also 0-2 in the Ivy League after losing back-to-back 3-0 matches to the same opponents Penn has faced, Yale and Princeton. The Red and Blue lead the all-time series 48-20 and are 6-4 in the last ten meetings. However, their last win against the Bears on the road came in 2013.
