Hoover's Golden Goal Winner Knocks Off No. 22 American, 3-2, in OT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team brought down their first ranked opponent of the season with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory over No. 22 American on Sunday. Alexa Hoover netted the game-winner in the 72nd minute as Penn improved to 4-4 overall on the season while American dropped to 7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*American was first to get on the board just four minutes into the contest when Noor Coenen connected on a penalty corner from a Samantha McCormick assist to take the early 1-0 lead.

*Despite the early setback, Penn came back and scored the equalizer in the 13th minute when Hoover ripped a shot on the Quakers own corner to tie the game at 1-1.

*Following a missed stroke by the hosts, Penn responded with a Gina Guccione score in the 20th minute off a scramble in front of net. The Quakers 2-1 lead held as the sides headed into halftime: American had the upper hand in shots, 8-4, while corners were tied at 4-4.

*Coming out of intermission, the Penn defense held strong and turned away several AU threats on attack. Despite the backfield stronghold, American scored the game-tying score when Coenen notched her second tally of the day on a shot through traffic in the 44th minute to tie the game at 2-2.

*Neither team would be able to net the winner in regulation as the Quakers headed into their first overtime game of the season. The Red and Blue didn't need much time, however, in the 7 v. 7 showdown. It took Hoover under two minutes into extra time to grab the golden-goal winner as Penn pulled out the 3-2 come-from-behind victory to knock off their first ranked opponent of the season.

*On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Liz Mata recorded eight saves in the victory while AU's Maura Jacobs had just one in the defeat. The Quakers had a solid 9-7 advantage in corners and fended off a 16-7 deficit in shots for the afternoon.
