Loving's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Over Harvard, 1-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team opened its Ivy League schedule against defending champion Harvard in traditional fashion Saturday; however, the result was anything but traditional, as the Quakers came away with their first win over the Crimson in five seasons and the first in Cambridge since 2007. Emma Loving provided the match-winner in the 30th minute and Kitty Qu's seven stops in net culminated in her third shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*The match opened with plenty of back-and-forth possession changes and midfield play, but in the 21st minute, Harvard got its first good look on net. Following a corner, the ball was deflected to the left of the far post right to the foot of a Crimson forward, but a swarm of Quakers converged and combined to block a close-range shot.

*Penn regained possession shortly thereafter and took the ball deep into Harvard territory where Allie Trzaska cleared a Crimson defender with a quick move to her right and fired a shot from 25 yards out, but landed just above the crossbar.

*In the 30th minute, Camillia Nwokedi carried the ball down the right side and checked up to find Loving just inside the box. Once she controlled the pass, Loving had a touch then fired for the far post and beat the Harvard goalkeeper Danielle Etzel in the bottom left corner to give Penn the lead. Loving's goal was the Quakers' first against Harvard since 2013, while also ending Etzel's scoreless streak spanning 384 minutes.

*The Penn back line put together one of its most impressive performances of the season, thwarting six Harvard corner kicks in the first half alone and clearing a total of ten on the afternoon.

*In the 81st minute, Harvard (6-4, 0-1 Ivy) threatened to knot the game at one with a score of its own, but the Quakers stepped in to make multiple stops along the way. Following one of their final corners, Kelsey Andrews made a critical steal and clear at the top of the box to prevent a potential open shot on goal.

*In addition to Penn's win being the first at Harvard since 2007, the 1-0 victory is also the first in an Ivy League opener under head coach Nicole Van Dyke. The Quakers also extended their unbeaten streak in road confernece matches in October, a stretch that dates back to the 2015 season.

WHAT'S NEXT
Penn (2-5-2, 1-0 Ivy) returns home to Rhodes Field Friday night to host Cornell in Ivy League play. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
