Field Hockey Begins Ivy Play with 2-0 Victory Over Cornell

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team (3-4, 1-0) started Ivy action on the right foot when they solidified a 2-0 shutout win over Cornell (5-2, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field. Hot temperatures in the upper 80's didn't keep the Red and Blue down as they dominated the match from start to finish.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Quakers came out firing from the start and had the upper hand in possession throughout the match. It took just 10 minutes for the Red and Blue to get on the board when Alexa Schneck collected a Rachel Huang pass at the top of the circle and finished low left post as Penn took the 1-0 lead.

*Penn had good looks in transition throughout the first half and several shots went just wide of the net in the early goings. At half, the Red and Blue held a 1-0 lead and an 8-2 advantage in shots over the Big Red.

*The Quakers rallied once again following intermission and kept pressuring the Cornell defense in the attacking third. In the 55th minute, Rachel Mirkin deflected in an Alexa Hoover shot off a Huang insert on a penalty corner to put the hosts ahead 2-0.

*Penn continued to pressure despite holding a comfortable edge on the scoreline and in possession. The Quaker defense was terrific throughout the match, holding the visitors to just seven shots and three penalty corners without any serious threats at net.

*The Red and Blue finalized the match with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Liz Mata registered two saves in the win.
