Football Visits Lehigh on Saturday

For the first time since 2013, Penn heads into Week 2 coming off a win after a 42-24 victory in the opener at Franklin Field last week. The Quakers were slow out of the gate. but piled up 21 points in the third quarter to pull away for Ray Priore's first win in a season opener as head coach of the Red and Blue. Up next, a Keystone State showdown with an old friend and the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.

The Penn-Lehigh Series—60th Meeting
One of Penn's earliest rivals, Lehigh has won the last two meetings and seven of the last nine dating back to 1990. The Quakers dominated the nascent stages of the series, winning 40 of the first 42 meetings. Since 1975, Penn is just 4-13 against the Mountain Hawks and 1-8 in Bethlehem.

Old Friends Meet Again
The two head coaches are very familiar with each other, each having served as a coordinator at Penn along the way to a head coaching job. Current Quakers coach Ray Priore was defensive coordinator and Lehigh head coach Andy Coen was offensive coordinator for six seasons together where the Quakers won three Ivy League titles. Coen has had the better of the two meetings since Priore ascended to the head coaching spot at Penn, winning each game by 21 points.

Last Time Versus Lehigh
The 2016 season opener for Penn was a tale of two halves. The Quakers played the Mountain Hawks even in the first 30 minutes, entering the break tied at 28-28. The second half was forgettable for the Red and Blue who were held scoreless while Lehigh added 21 points for a comfortable 49-28 win at Franklin Field. The turning point was likely a Lehigh touchdown as time expired in the second quarter to tie the game followed by a Mountain Hawks' score on the first drive of the second half.

Marquee Wide Receiver Matchup
Not many FCS games this season will feature an All-American wide receiver on each team, but that's what's on tap for today. The Quakers line up two-time All-American and 2017 preseason first-team All-American Justin Watson while Lehigh counters with 2016 third-team All-American and 2017 preseason All-American Troy Pelletier. Both Watson and Pelletier are on the Watch List for the Walter Payton Award as well. Last season, Pelletier had 10 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown in the Penn-Lehigh game while Watson caught eight passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Here's how each has fared in the two games against each other...
    Watson: 18 catches, 276 yards, 3 TDs
    Pelletier: 20 catches, 232 yards, 3 TDs

Leading Indicators
Penn has protected leads as well as anyone in the country under Ray Priore. The Red and Blue are 12-0 when leading at halftime, and 14-0 when leading at the end of the third quarter.

Watson's 100% Effort
Senior wide receiver Justin Watson enters today's game with 14 career 100-yard games — the most ever by a Penn wide receiver (Rob Milanese '03) and tied for No. 2 all-time in the Ivy League. Watson is one 100-yard game away tying the record and two from setting a new Ivy League record.

Watson's Catch Of The Day
Justin Watson has appeared in all 31 possible games during his career and has made at least one catch — in fact he has at least two — in all 31 games. His run of 31 consecutive games with at least one catch is a Penn record and he enters today tied for No, 3 all-time among Ivy League players.

Vecchio Vanquishes Opponents
Senior defensive end Louis Vecchio has had multiple tackles for loss in three consecutive games dating back to 2016. He had three TFLs — all sacks — against Harvard before closing 2017 with a pair of TFLs at Cornell. Last week, he had 2.5 TFLs against Ohio Dominican.

Malcome In The Middle of Things in Debut
Freshman Isaiah Malcome made an immediate impact in his Penn Football debut, accounting for 200 all-purpose yards against Ohio Dominican. His 103 kickoff return yards were the most by a Quaker since 2015 and his 48 punt return yards were the most in a game since 2012. For the game, Malcome averaged 16.7 yards-per-touch.

You Always Remember Your First
As far as first memories at Franklin Field go, sophomore Nick Robinson's first collegiate pass could not have gone any better. The transfer from the University of Georgia dialed up a 59-yard touchdown pass to Justin Watson in the second quarter of the 2017 opener on his first career passing attempt.

Georgia On My Mind
Penn's offense had a peachy flavor in the opener, with Georgia connections accounting for 198 of Penn's 302 rushing yards. Karekin Brooks (Marietta, Ga.) and Isaiah Malcome (Atlanta) call Georgia home while Nick Robinson started his collegiate career in Athens with the Bulldogs. Jacob Martin (Buford, Ga.) added two tackles on defense. All total, the Red and Blue feature eight players from the state of Georgia on the 2017 roster — sixth-most of any state.
