PHILADELPHIA – Despite
Allie Trzaska's dramatic 82nd minute goal to tie the game late Thursday night, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team could not overcome Drexel's go-ahead tally in the closing minutes, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Dragons. Goalkeeper
Kitty Qu made a game-high five saves in the City Six matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
*Drexel was able to advance the ball deep into Penn territory in the opening minutes, resulting in an early corner kick in the 5th minute. Wilhelmina Haush-Fausboll lofted a high service into the box and Madison Dunn was there to clean up the deflection, depositing it just over the goal line.
*Penn was able to center a ball for
Emily Sands from 25 yards out in the 15th minute, but her shot aimed for the far post was met with a diving save by Drexel keeper Christi Ogunsami.
*In the 30th minute following a change of possession, Sands found
Katharine Larson down the right side with a well-placed ball to give the freshman a chance on net. However, Larson's run and ensuing chance on goal was blocked on a last-chance sliding attempt.
*After the Quakers were awarded a free kick in the 34th minute, Drexel made a clear attempt that ended up right on the foot of
Allie Trzaska. From 30 yards out, Trzaska ripped a beautiful shot on goal that was deflected just over the crossbar by the keeper.
* The Quakers came out of the break full of energy and were able to control possession in the opening minutes of the second half. Just 27 seconds in, Sands was able to fire another shot on goal, followed by Larson's sliding play at midfield to find Higa in space in the 51st minute. Higa streaked down the right side of the field and played a strong shot on goal, but the keeper was there to deny it.
*
Chase Geffert took a Penn free kick in the 71st minute and lofted a high service into the box intended for Higa outside the six, who battled through contact but no foul was called as Drexel escaped the threat.
*After Sands and Higa re-entered the game in the 82nd minute, the Quakers set up their best opportunity of the night when
Paige Howard found Sands inside the box and her touch deflected off the Drexel defender. From eight yards out, Trzaska provided a dramatic equalizer – her first goal of the season – as the Quakers locked into a 1-1 tie with the Dragons.
*Moments later in the 86th minute, Drexel (4-4) provided the game-winner off a corner kick from Vanessa Kara, who's service into the box was met with a header from Kiera Hennessey into the back of the net.
