Box Score
PHILADEPHIA - A 26th minute score from senior
Joe Swenson wasn't enough for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team against Seton Hall on Sunday night, as the Quakers fell 2-1 to the Pirates at Rhodes Field. With the loss, Penn drops to 0-3 on the year.
Key Moments
*The Pirates did a good job of controlling the run of the play in the early moments of the match, notching their first shot of the night in only the third minute. Penn's first shot came in the 12th minute on a strike from
Casey Barone off a corner kick from
Gavin Barger.
*Seton Hall continued to rally off shots before
Sam Wancowicz was issued a yellow card in the 26th minute. Just 38 seconds later,
Aramis Kouzine found a streaking Swenson in the box with only the keeper to beat, and Swenson converted to make the score 1-0.
*Penn's lead would be short-lived however, as after the ensuing kickoff the Pirates were granted a free kick several yards outside of their box. Andres Arcila sent in a high ball that was tapped out by Quaker goalkeeper
Etan Mabourakh, sent right to the foot of Spencer Burkhardt. Burkhardt redirected the ball back into the box, finding the head of Marco Neves who found the back of the net, quickly equalizing the game at 1-1.
*Neither side featured a serious offensive threat the remainder of the first half, as the squads entered the break at 1-1 with SHU owning a slight lead in both shots and corners.
*It was more of the same at the beginning of the second period, before yet another set piece would doom the Red and Blue. Set up right outside their box, Arcila sent in a high arching shot to the back of the net off the free kick, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
*The Quakers nearly equalized the game in similar fashion to what SHU did earlier, as Kouzine had a key chance on goal in the upcoming minute that was just saved by the Pirate goalie.
*Penn's play intensified in the waning moments of the game, with the Red and Blue pushing pace and controling the game, however the Quakers were unable to convert and find the equalizer.
Penn Notes
*Swenson's goal was the third of his career at Penn and the first since October of 2015. The senior led the team with two shots on the night, both on goal.
*Freshmen
Wes Maki and
Jake Kohlbrenner were featured as key subs for the Quakers, as both played a total of 69 minutes and started the second half for Penn.
*Etan Mabourakh made his first start of the season in goal for Penn after making 15 starts last season. The junior made three saves.
