PHILADELPHIA - Despite out-shooting Lehigh 11-4 Friday night, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team could not produce the equalizer in the closing minutes of its season opener, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh's Annika Jansa provided the difference maker late in the first half off a corner kick to give the Mountain Hawks their first win of the season.
How It Happened
*The Quakers started five newcomers in the season opener: freshmen Katharine Larson, Paige Howard and Jadyn Wilensky, as well as transfers Cameron Keating and Laura Hamilton.
*In the 37th minute, Allie Trzaska was awarded a free kick just outside the box but it was blocked, setting up a possession for Lehigh on the other end of the field.
*The Mountain Hawks (1-0-1) capitalized on the other end in the 39th minute, as Kayla Arestivo sent a corner kick in to Sabrina Mertz, who then found Jansa from 25 yards out and found the top left corner of the net for the game's first goal.
*The Quakers controlled possession for a vast majority of the second half, out-shooting Lehigh 7-1 in the period.
*In the 80th minute, Erica Higa had an opportunity from 20 yards out, but the left-footed shot sailed into the grasp of Lehigh goalkeeper Sam Miller.
*Sasha Stephens sent in a high-arching corner kick into the middle of the box in the 85th minute, but Trzaska's header attempt on goal landed just over the crossbar as Lehigh regained possession and held on to the one-goal victory.
