SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team will row for three national championships on Sunday after advancing to the Grand finals in the Varsity Eights, Varsity Fours, and Straight Fours on Friday morning.
Of particular note, the Quakers’ Varsity 8 had the best time among the eight boats across Friday’s two heats, clocking 5:48.994 over the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course. That was nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Yale (5:50.512), which was followed closely by Harvard (5:50.976). Navy was fourth in the heat in 5:57.222.
As a result of Friday’s finishes, Penn will race in Lane 1 in the Varsity 8 Grand final on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. (3:05 Eastern). The Quakers will race against Cornell (Lane 2), Columbia (Lane 3), Yale (Lane 4), Princeton (Lane 5) and Harvard (Lane 6). This will mark the third-straight year that Penn has raced for the national championship in the Varsity Eights; the last time that happened three years in a row was 1991-93 when the Red and Blue took fifth, second and third, respectively.
The Varsity 4 also will race for a national championship on Sunday after taking third in its Friday heat. The Quakers covered the course in 6:40.821, which was behind heat winner Navy (6:33.233) and second-place Dartmouth (6:38.822) but well ahead of fourth-place Yale (6:46.951). MIT was fifth, followed by Georgetown.
Penn will race in Lane 6 on Sunday at 9:10 a.m. (12:10 p.m. Eastern). The other boats in that race will be Harvard (Lane 1), Navy (Lane 2), Dartmouth (Lane 3), Columbia (Lane 4), and Princeton (Lane 5).
The Straight 4 (no cox) took second in its Friday heat, as Harvard won in 6:20.356 while the Quakers were behind them in 6:27.784. Navy was third, while Columbia was fourth and Yale fifth. On Sunday, Penn will race in Lane 4 in the Grand final at 8:20 a.m. (11:20 Eastern) alongside Princeton (Lane 1), Harvard (Lane 2), Cornell (Lane 3), Dartmouth (Lane 5), and Navy (Lane 6).
