PHILADELPHIA - Despite cutting what was once a four-goal deficit to one with under four minutes remaining in Friday's opening round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, No. 7 Penn could not complete the comeback attempt as Navy escaped with an 11-10 victory at Penn Park.
Penn and Navy found themselves in a back-and-forth scoring affair from the opening draw, as the two teams traded a pair of goals in the first 14 minutes of play. With the Quakers down 2-1, Emily Rogers-Healion netted two free position goals within 26 seconds of each other to spark the first of four unanswered goals for Penn to take a three goal advantage. Gabby Rosenzweig and Alex Condon supplied the other two tallies, as Rosenzweig forced a Navy turnover and took it the length of the field for a man-down score.
Navy kept the Penn offense scoreless for the final nine minutes of the half, allowing Andie O'Sullivan to string together three straight goals to draw the Midshipmen even at 5-5 with the Quakers heading into the half. The Quakers forced ten turnovers in the first half alone, while also going a perfect 12-for-12 in clear opportunities.
Navy was first on the board coming out of the break, as Jenna Collins pushed the midshipmen ahead, 6-5. The Midshipmen continues their fast-paced offensive attack through the midway point of the second half, taking a 10-6 lead with just 14 minutes remaining.
Rosenzweig and Erin Barry strung together three unanswered goals between the two - ending a scoreless stretch of 14-plus minutes - to cut the deficit to one with nine minutes remaining, as Penn and Navy traded scores to make it an 11-10 game with under three minutes remaining.
With under a minute to play, the Quakers found themselves with one last offensive possession with a chance to send the game to overtime, but Rosenzweig's shot was deflected in front of the crease as Navy held on for the final 35 seconds to advance to the second round Sunday.
Rosenzweig led the Penn offense with three goals, while Britt Brown made seven saves in net for the Quakers.
Emily Rogers-Healion capped one of the finest seasons in Penn history with 61 points -- the fifth-most ever scored by a Quaker in one year. Her 26 assists in 2017 are tied for eighth-most in a season by a Quaker and her 35 goals are tied for 15th. She will graduate with 107 carer points -- No. 18 on Penn's all-time career scoring list -- and her 49 career assists are No. 7 all-time.
Alex Condon concluded her third season with the Red and Blue with 55 points -- tied for 10th most in a season. Her 45 goals are the fourth-most scored in a single season by a Penn player. She enters her final season ranked No. 14 on Penn's all-time goal scoring list with 86 and her 101 career points are tied for No. 22.
Though she missed the final four games of the season with injury, Caroline Cummings finished 2017 with 37 goals -- tied for 11th most in a single season by a Quaker.
