Women's Tennis Falters at Home to Columbia

PHILADELPHIA - After dropping a tightly contested doubles point, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team fought valiantly in singles but came up just short, falling to Columbia on Friday afternoon, 4-3. The loss slots the Quakers down to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in the Ivy League, while the Lions earn their first win in Ancient Eight play.
All three courts were nail biters in doubles play, as neither squad could pull away for separation throughout the entirety of the point. Luba Vazhenina and Marta Kowalska teamed up for Penn's first victory of the day, taking a 6-4 win on court three, but courts one and two were unable to seal the deal for the Red and Blue. First, Ria Vaidya and Lina Qostal fell 7-5 after fighting back from a late break, before Kana Daniel and OJ Singh dropped a tiebreak match after holding two match points. The failure to convert put Penn in a 1-0 hole that would prove to be the difference in the day.
Singles play saw tough results for the Quakers in the first set, as only Vaidya and freshman Sarah Dreyfuss pulled out opening frame wins. Dreyfuss, playing in her first match since February 4th, battled Columbia's Renee Ren on court five. The Lions would increase their lead with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win on court four, before making it a 3-0 advantage for the visiting squad as Daniel dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match on court one to Alex Solovyev.
Vaidya would pick up her first win in Ivy action on court two for the Quakers, defeating Andrea Kevakian 7-6(1), 6-3 to make the overall score 3-1, but just seconds later, Columbia would clinch the match with a victory on court six. Rookies Ashley Zhu and Dreyfuss were able to tally three-set wins in their respective flights, but it was too little, too late for the Red and Blue against the Lions.
Penn will swing right back into action, visiting Cornell on Sunday, April 9th for its first Ivy League road match. First serve between the Quakers and Big Red is set for 1 p.m. in Ithaca.
