NEW YORK, N.Y. – The
University of Pennsylvania’s men’s tennis team dropped its Ivy opener on Friday
afternoon by a 4-0 margin at No. 22 Columbia. The Quakers move to 13-7 overall
while Columbia, the defending Ivy champion, improves to 13-3 (2-0, Ivy League) on the year.
Penn dropped the doubles point courtesy of losses in the
No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Nicholai Westergaard and Marshall Sharp suffered a
6-3 defeat in the top slot while Josh Pompan and Thomas Spratt fell by a
6-2 margin at No. 3.
The Lions used the momentum to earn singles wins at No. 2, 4
and 6. Timothy Wang put Columbia on the board with a 6-0, 6-3 win over freshman
Max Cancilla (No. 6) while Alex Keyser followed with a straight-sets win over
Matt Nardella (No. 4). No. 67 Victor Pham clinched the triumph for the home team
with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Nicolas Podesta.
In unfinished matches, Mautner won the first set for Penn
(No. 1) while Pompan (No. 3) and Westergaard (No. 5) each split sets.
