PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team has its sights set on a rebound performance this weekend, set to continue Ivy League action at home against Columbia on Friday, April 7 before traveling to Cornell Sunday, April 9. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Quakers (7-7, 0-1 Ivy) hope to get back to their winning ways after a tough 5-2 loss at home to Princeton to open play against the Ancient Eight. Penn proved victorious in the doubles point against the Tigers, but were unable to hold onto the lead, dropping five of six singles matches in the loss. Senior Kana Daniel notched the lone victory in singles for the Red and Blue, defeating Katrine Steffensen 6-2, 6-4. Daniel is currently the only Ivy League player ranked by the ITA in singles, checking in at 89th nationally.
Daniel is one of four for the Red and Blue who has won eight or more matches on the singles court, joined by Marta Kowalska, Lina Qostal and Ashley Zhu. Both Kowalska and Qostal boast nine wins in singles this spring, but saw lengthy win streaks come to a close last time out. Daniel herself has won seven consecutive matches.
In doubles, the pairing of Qostal and Ria Vaidya has proven successful to-date, as the duo owns a record of 4-1 on the year with three-consecutive wins, including a 1-0 start to Ivy play. Kowalska and Luba Vazhenina have partnered in every match during the spring season, owning six wins together.
Columbia enters Friday's match with an overall record of 4-11, including an 0-1 mark in Ivy League play after dropping its conference opener to Cornell, 7-0. Alex Solovyev leads the Lions with six wins during dual-match competition, mainly near the top of the lineup. Penn owns a healthy 27-5 record all-time against Columbia, and has won the past two matches against the Lions, including a 4-3 victory a season ago.
Cornell is set to battle Princeton prior to its match-up against the Quakers on Friday, but currently owns a mark of 11-4 on the season, with a 1-0 record in Ivy play. The Big Red have won seven-straight matches heading into the weekend after starting the season 1-3. Marika Cusick heads the squad at No. 1 singles, while Priyanka Shah boasts the most wins on the team this spring with nine. Penn leads the all-time series with Cornell 33-6, including victories in four of the last six matches. Last season, the Big Red defeated the Quakers 5-2 in Philadelphia, spurning Penn's hopes for an Ivy title.
