PHILADELPHIA - Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field programs put together yet another impressive showing, bosting 17 new top-10 school record marks in events at Princeton and Virginia.
The smaller group of Quakers attended the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., headlined by a strong contingent of women sprinters.
Taylor McCorkle notched two fifth-place finishes in her respective events, with a time of 11.67 seconds in the 100m and 24.11 seconds in the 200m. Joined by McCorkle in the 100m was
Barbara Biney with a time of 11.96 seconds, ranking sixth in program history, while
Cecil Ene followed behind at 24.54 seconds in the 200m.
Ene followed that up with a strong time of 54.49 seconds in the 400m, good for fourth in program history. Freshman
Breanne Bygrave earned two top-15 placements in both hurdle events. In relays, a new quartet of Biney, McCorkle, Ene and
Elena Brown-Soler ran the 4x100m, posting a time of 45.70 seconds, ranking third in school history.
Brown-Soler also represented the Red and Blue in the heptathlon at the Virginia Challenge, finishing with 4,727 points to finish 12th at the meet and ranking sixth all-time at Penn. The rookie's best event was the 200m, with a time of 24.22 seconds, good for third in Charlotesville and sixth in program history. Wrapping up the action down south was two stellar field performances, as
Lisa Sesink-Clee finished first in javelin with a throw of 45.26m, seventh in Penn history and captain Noah Kennedy-White tossed a meet-best 55.38m in discus.
At the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, records continued to fall for the Quakers. Senior
Chris Hatler went down a distance to the 800m, posting a time of 1:48.88, ranking first among all collegiate competitors at the meet and good for fifth in program history, while also sitting 31st in the NCAA East Region.
Chris Luciano featured a breakout performance in the 5K, recording a time of 14:11.28 to finish fourth, good for eighth in Penn record books.
Mike Monroe continued his impressive career in the high jump, placing third while clearing a height of 2.10m, also ranking 31st in the NCAA East Region.
Sean Clarke continued to dominate the pole vault with a first-place finish after clearing 5.15m, while
Sean Ryan cleared 200 feet for the first time in his career in the hammer throw, posting a distance of 61.53m, finishing fourth in event, second in Penn record books and 37th in the NCAA East Region.
On the women's side,
Maddie Villalba posted the seventh-best performance in Penn history in the 800m with a time of 2:07.94 to finish 11th, before senior
Ashley Montgomery posted a dominant first-place finish in the 1,500m, improving upon her already-set Penn school record with a time of 14:17.95, now ranking 14th in the NCAA East Region.
Clarissa Whiting continued the dominating performance in distance races, taking first in the 5K with a time of 16:20.72, ranking fifth in program history.
Rounding out track events was
Meghan Barnes who finished fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.23 seconds, breaking into the Penn top-10 for the first time.
Karli Visconto ran a time of 10:42.31 in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing 13th while posting the third-best time in Penn record books.
In field events, it was the usual suspects for the Quakers, as a trio of pole vaulters finished in the top-four, led by
Molly Minnig who cleared a height of 3.85m for Penn, followed by
Nicole Macco and
Monica Benz who both reached heights of 3.75m. In the shot put, freshman sensation
Maura Kimmel threw a distance of 14.29m, good for fourth at the meet and third in program history, while
Isis Trotman leaped to the school record yet again in the hammer throw with a throw of 56.96.
The Quakers won't get too much time off, set to compete at the 123rd running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field this week, set to start on Thursday, April 26.
