HANOVER, N.H. - After rallying from a 3-0 deficit, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team came just points away from victory, but was unable to prevail in the end, dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 44 Dartmouth. With the loss, Penn drops to 10-9 overall and even at 3-3 in the Ivy League, dashing the title hopes of the Quakers.
With temperatures in New Hampshire only reaching highs in the upper-40's, play was pushed indoors, making for a great college tennis environment with fans from both sides packing the bleachers. Action began with doubles and each court got out to a dominating 5-1 lead, but unfortunately for the Red and Blue, only one of those courts featured a Penn advantage.
Marta Kowalska and
Luba Vazhenina began and finished strong on court three, winning 6-2, but the highly decorated duo of Taylor Ng and Kristina Mathis evened things up on court with a 6-1 victory.
Ria Vaidya and
Lina Qostal battled back from down 5-1 to cut it to 5-3, even earning a game point to make it 5-4, but the Big Green pair of Julia Schroeder and Racquel Lyn ultimately staved off the Quakers winning 6-3.
Down 1-0, Penn knew it had its work cut out in singles play. The Red and Blue would split success in first sets with Dartmouth, with each side winning three of six opening frames. The home squad would increase its lead to 2-0 with a 7-5, 6-0 win on court four, before freshman
Ashley Zhu fell to Kristina Mathis on court three, putting the Quakers in a 3-0 hole.
Penn would respond, and do so quickly. Kowalska breezed to a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six for the Quakers' first point of the match, before
Kana Daniel, ranked 105 in the country in singles, prevailed with a strong performance on the top court, defeating Ng 6-2, 7-5. All eyes were tuned into courts two and five, the final pair that would decide the match, featuring Vaidya and rookie
Sarah Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss won the first set 6-4, before stumbling in the second, ultimately losing 6-3. The Miami, Fla. native shot out to multiple leads in the third frame, before Dartmouth's Lyn responded to go up 5-4 with a match point that would punctuate the entire affair. Dreyfuss had other plans though, eventually turning back the match point and going on to win 7-5 in the final frame, evening the overall match at 3-3.
Vaidya's match on court two was full of drama, as the junior fell in the first set 7-5, before holding on late in the second set, winning 7-6(5). Vaidya continued to hammer balls all across the court, but Dartmouth's Crawford played valiant defense, resulting in epic battles in every point. Crawford earned a 4-1 lead in the final frame, but again Vaidya battled back, making it 4-3. Up 40-30, Vaidya had a chance to even the set 4-4, but an unlucky net chord rolled the wrong way, eventually pushing the Big Green to a 6-3 win on court two and a 4-3 win overall.
Penn hits the road for its season finale on Sunday, April 23, set to battle league-leading and No. 49 Harvard at 1 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
