Women's Tennis Set for Final Home Matches vs. Brown & Yale

Follow @PennWTennis

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team hopes to keep its momentum rolling into the weekend, set to host Brown and Yale for its final two home contests on Friday (2 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) respectively. The Quakers will honor their two-woman senior class of Kana Daniel and Luba Vazhenina on Saturday, April 15 prior to battling the Bulldogs.

Penn (8-8, 1-2 Ivy) garnered a much-needed victory last time out against Cornell, defeating the Big Red on the road by the slimmest of margins, 4-3. The Quakers won the doubles point and split three of six matches in singles, all in three sets, to pick up their first Ivy League win of the season.

Daniel, a senior from Valencia, Spain, has been a mainstay for the Red and Blue since her freshman season, totaling 65 wins in singles and 63 wins in doubles throughout her career. Daniel is currently ranked 90th in the nation in singles by the ITA, the only player in the Ivy League to check into the rankings. Daniel is a two-time first-team All-Ivy performer in doubles, while taking first-team All-Ivy marks in singles a year ago.

Vazhenina, a senior from Bradenton, Fla., has played primarily in doubles this season for the Quakers, teaming up with sophomore Marta Kowalska each time on the court this spring as the duo has totaled seven wins this season, including a 2-1 mark in Ivy League action thus far. Vazhenina owns 15 wins in doubles this year to lead the squad, with a total of 37 victories in her career to go with 18 wins in singles.

Junior Ria Vaidya was a key component of Penn's success over Cornell, serving as the clinching point at the No. 2 singles position. Vaidya defeated the Big Red's Alexandra D'Ascenzo in three sets, her second-straight victory after taking down Columbia's Andrea Kevakian on Friday. Vaidya is one of five Quakers with seven or more wins this season in singles play, joined by Daniel with eight, Lina Qostal with nine and Kowalska and Ashley Zhu each with 10.

In doubles, Penn owns a 5-1 record this year when winning the doubles point, with the only loss coming to Princeton to start Ivy League play. Kowalska and Vazhenina lead the squad with seven wins this spring, while Qostal and Vaidya follow closely with a record of 5-2.

Brown sports an overall record of 11-6 headed into Friday's match, with an Ivy League mark of 2-1. The Bears have defeated Dartmouth and Yale while falling to Harvard to begin Ancient Eight action. Brown and Penn have faced one similar opponent to-date this season, as both squads took down Boston University earlier in the year. Alyza Benotto and Dayna Lord lead the squad in singles, while teaming up as the Bears' top doubles squad as well. Penn has doubled up Brown in the overall series, leading 26-13, including a 15-5 mark in Philadelphia. The Quakers have split the last four meetings with the Bears, but took down Brown 4-3 in Providence a year ago.

Yale currently sits last in the Ivy League with an 0-3 record to begin conference play, owning losses to Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard. The Bulldogs sit 7-12 overall, while sharing two common opponents with the Quakers as both defeated Boston University while Penn took down St. John's earlier this season, opposite of Yale's loss to the Red Storm. The Red and Blue trail in the overall series against the Bulldogs, 17-26, as Yale has taken the past nine matches over Penn. Penn is seeking its first victory over the Elis since 2007.
