PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team continued its winning ways, earning a dominant 6-1 victory over local rival Drexel Saturday afternoon. The win improves Penn's record to 3-5, including a perfect 3-0 mark at home.
The Quakers emerged from a tight doubles point, earning wins on courts two and three, to gain the early advantage over the Dragons. First, the duo of
Ashley Zhu and
OJ Singh nabbed a 6-3 win on court three, before
Marta Kowalska and
Luba Vazhenina defeated Drexel's No. 2 pair on court two.
Penn took its early momentum into singles play, winning four of six first sets across the board. Junior
Lina Qostal made easy work of Lea Winkler on court four, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, before
Ria Vaidya controlled her opponent on court two to win 6-2, 6-1, giving the Red and Blue a 3-0 edge in the overall match.
Kowalska sealed the deal for Penn on court five with a straight-sets win over Clary Rodriguez Cruz, before Drexel got its only win of the afternoon on court six. Penn closed out the match with two three-set victories, on courts three and one, as Vazhenina and Zhu both prevailed. Penn moves its all-time record against the Dragons to a perfect 12-0 all-time.
The Quakers will head to the Sunshine State of Florida for four matches over spring break, competing in both Miami and Tampa Bay. Penn is set to face Boston University first, on Monday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
