Box Score
PROVIDENCE – No. 11 Penn returned to its roots in a 7-2 win at Brown, stifling the Bears at almost every turn as the Quakers conceded just one goal in each half to pick up their first Ivy League win of 2017.
The Quakers improved to 7-2 overall, holding Brown to just 17 total shots – only seven of which found their way to goal.
Britt Brown made five saves – four in the second half to deny Brown any semblance of a comeback – but it was the work done by the defensive unit in front of her which stymied the Bears early and often.
Sophomore defender
Katy Junior had a career-high seven ground balls – the most by a Quaker since Meg Markham had seven against Harvard in 2014. She also caused four of Brown's 23 turnovers in the game. Her partner in crime on defense
Megan Kelly had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Penn's work defensively allowed the attacking group time to acclimate itself.
Emily Rogers-Healion scored the game's opening goal 6:37 into the game with a nice run behind the goal and a crease roll finish. The Bears would tie the game 11:38 in when Zoe Verni found space in tight and finished an Emma Dahle pass.
Brown would not score for the next 27:05 of game play, allowing Penn to build a 4-1 lead – an advantage which was insurmountable given the scoring pace at hand in the game.
Caroline Cummings scored with 10:09 to play in the first half, putting the bow on a beautiful passing sequence with Rogers-Healion.
Gabby Rosenzweig would give Penn a 3-1 halftime lead and Cummings would net her second of the game 7:56 into the second half as Penn all but pulled away.
Cummings would score three times in the second half, finishing the game's goal scoring with an outstanding individual effort as she worked her defender three different ways behind the net before slipping out front for her 26th goal of the season.
The two goals allowed are the fewest by a Penn team since conceding just one to Columbia on April 1, 2015. That game against the Lions was also the last time a Penn team held an opponent to seven shots on goal.
