Box Score
BALTIMORE – Eight was great for
Alex Condon as she scored eight times to power No. 10 Penn past No 18 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field, 10-7.
Condon's eight goals were one away from tying the program record for goals in a game (9, accomplished three times and not since 1997) and one away from tying the Ivy League record – also nine – which has only been accomplished seven times previously.
Condon did the work on the attacking end, and
Britt Brown was a rock in goal for the Quakers. One week after posting 14 saves at Delaware, Brown followed up with a new career-high of 16 stops – most in a game since 2012.
The story of the game was which team had its run at the right time. Penn scored five of the game's first seven goals to take a 5-2 lead with 8:04 to play in the first half. The Quakers wouldn't score for another 19:00 of game play as the Blue Jays connected for five goals of their own to take a 7-5 lead with 22:09 to play.
That would be the last goal Hopkins would score as Penn's defense clamped down and allowed the attack to net the game's final five goals. Brown would make four saves over the run to lock up the win.
Johns Hopkins opened the scoring 3:35 into the game off a Haley Schweizer goal. Her shot to the left post snuck past the stick of
Britt Brown and gave Hopkins an early 1-0 lead after Penn had gone scoreless on its first two possessions of the game despite three shots.
Condon would get Penn on the board 6:22 into the game, finally connecting for the Quakers on their sixth shot of the game. She took a
Caroline Cummings pass and fired home her third of the year to the top corner to tie the game, 1-1.
Condon needed just 2:19 of game play to notch her hat trick, scoring three in a row to give Penn a 3-1 lead 8:43 into the game. Her second goal was assisted by
Emily Rogers-Healion and her third came off the first career assist off the stick off
Chrissy Corcoran. By the end of the first half, she had scored five times – a new career high – as Penn led the Blue Jays, 5-3.
Hopkins would score twice in the opening 3:11 of the second half to tie the game at 5-5. Emily Kenul was opportunistic on a rebound 2:07 into the second half, getting to a loose ball first after
Britt Brown stopped a free position attempt and scoring to make it 5-4. Just over a minute later, Schweizer scored her third of the game to level the contest at 5-5.
The run became a five-goal spurt for the Blue Jays as Hopkins took a 7-5 lead with 22:09 to play as Schweizer scored two more to increase her total for the game to five.
The Quakers responded to the sudden two-goal deficit with a run of their own.
Caroline Cummings started it off with a free position goal with 19:04 remaining. Her sixth goal of the season ended a 19-minute goal scoring drought for the Quakers over the middle portion of the game.
After Cummings scored, Condon would add two quick ones – needing just 1:31 to give Penn an 8-7 lead. Three minutes later, Condon would strike again and give Penn a 9-7 lead with 14:08 to play. Freshman
Gabby Rosenzweig would cap the scoring with her second of the season to provide the final margin.
Penn returns to action on March 1, taking on Rutgers in New Jersey at 6 p.m.
