PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team used a dominant, 27-2 run late in the first half to break a 25-25 tie, and while Brown threatened on occasion in the second half the Quakers were able to keep their poise and gain a 96-72 victory at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Penn has now won three Ivy League games in a row and is 10-12 overall, 3-6 in Ivy League play. With Columbia's loss at Harvard, the Quakers are now tied with Cornell just a game out of fourth place which would qualify the Quakers for the Ivy League Tournament. Brown fell to 11-14 overall, 2-7 in Ivy play.
Numbers of Note
*Penn scored 96 points, most since a 97-74 win over Florida Gulf Coast on November 18, 2006.
*The last time the Quakers scored 96 in an Ivy League game? How about February 6, 2004 in a 104-69 win over Harvard at The Palestra.
*It was Penn's largest margin of victory in an Ivy League game since February 4, 2011 (78-47 win over Dartmouth at The Palestra), and the Quakers' largest Ivy road win since February 22, 2008 (88-62 at Dartmouth).
*Penn also set team bests in the Donahue era in first-half points (52), field goals made (34), field-goal percentage (.576) and three-point FG percentage (.483), and tied team bests in three-point FG made (14) and blocked shots (8).

Ryan Betley 's previous scoring high was 22 points, set last Sunday vs. Cornell. He had 23 by halftime on Friday, including 10 in a row that got Penn from seven to 17 and then 13 during the Quakers' 27-2 run to end the first half. He ended the night with 28 and has 50 in the last two games.

How It Happened
The score was 25-25 when Penn went on an absolute tear, scoring 17 in a row--the team's longest unanswered scoring run of the season--and ending the half with a 27-2 run to go up 52-27 at halftime. Freshmen
Ryan Betley (13 points in the run),
Devon Goodman (7) and
AJ Brodeur (2) scored 22 of the 27 points in the run, and Betley ended the half with 23 which was a career high.
Penn knocked down nine three-pointers in the opening stanza, shooting a sizzling 52.9 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, the Quakers were 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the field in the period.
Brown scored nine points right away to start the second half, forcing Penn head coach
Steve Donahue to call a quick timeout. That seemed to calm the young Quakers down, who went on a 9-2 run out of the stoppage to push the lead back up to 23.
Max Rothschild was a particular spark off the bench, coming up with four points to settle things. He finished with five points, six rebounds and two assists in nine minutes.
Matt Howard also had seven points early in the period.
Brown used a six-point run to get the deficit down to 16 one more time, at 78-62, and then after
Jackson Donahue hit a three-pointer he was assessed a technical foul and Steven Spieth (26 points) knocked down the free throws for the Bears. However, Donahue responded with another trey, and then Goodman scored five-straight points. That pushed Penn ahead 89-64 and that pretty much sealed it.
