Box Score PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team produced a hard-fought effort in its season finale at Rhodes Field Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell to No. 13 Princeton, 1-0. Goalkeeper
Kitty Qu backed up why she belongs in the discussion as one of the nation's top keepers, making eight saves - including a few spectacular diving stops to keep the game within reach for the Quakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*Penn honored its four seniors -
Anna Estep,
Erica Higa,
Darby Mason and
Kristen Miller - prior to the match, as the four took the field for the final time in the Red & Blue.
*Qu was thrust into the middle of the action early, as Princeton produced the first two shots on goal of the game. The sophomore made her first save in the sixth minute, but the second came on a header off a Tigers corner kick that caromed off the cross bar.
*In the 16th minute,
Katharine Larson intercepted a Princeton pass the opposition's territory and found Miller on the edge of the 18, but offsides was called to negate the play and potentially a Quaker score.
*In the 33rd minute, Tomi Kennedy fired a shot for the far post from 15 yards out, but Qu sprawled to her right to make a fantastic save, keeping the game scoreless in the process. However just seconds later, Mikaela Symanovich sent a ball to Kennedy outside the 18, who then took a touch to passed to Vanessa Gregoire. After making a quick move to her right, Gregoire was able to net the game's eventual game-winning goal.
*Following the break, Princeton opened the second half with a majority of the possession played in the Penn third. However, the tide turned in the 65th minute when
Sasha Stephens took the first Penn corner of the afternoon. Stephens played a ball to the middle of the box and ended in a deflection to the right foot of
Kelsey Andrews, but her shot went just wide of the near post.
*In the 72nd minute, Qu made her seventh save of the match when Princeton's Kennedy attempted to fire off-balance from seven yards out to add an insurance tally, but it was to no avail.
*Shortly after in the 75th minute, Andrews played a ball ahead to Miller from just outside midfield, who received it with a touch and a fire on goal from 25 yards out, but it sailed over the cross bar and out of play. The Quakers kept the pressure on in the final ten minutes, forcing Princeton to keep its players deep in their own third. However, Penn could not find the opportunity on goal as the Tigers escaped with the 1-0 victory.
Penn finishes its 2017 campaign with an overall record of 5-8-3 with a 3-3-1 mark in Ivy League play. With the season's conclusion,
Kitty Qu's .890 save percentage is now the second-best in program history, while her 0.62 goals-against average is good for fifth all-time.
