PHILADELPHIA – A trio of Quakers advanced to the finals of the 2017 Keystone Classic presented by Canna Milne Financial, but all three came up just short of the top spot.
Joe Velliquette (157),
May Bethea (165) and No. 12
Frank Mattiace (197) each finished in second place, leading a group of four Quakers who earned medals on home mats.
Mattiace was matched up against a Penn State opponent for the second year in a row in the Keystone final, this time falling to Anthony Cassar, 7-4. After a scoreless first period, Cassar put the first points on the board with a reversal in the second. Mattiace would trail, 4-2, in the third before tying the match with an escape and a second stall call on Cassar. Riding time was a factor, though, so Mattiace needed more points. He lunged in late, but Cassar would counter for the three-point win.
At 165 pounds,
May Bethea (ranked No. 20 at 157) matched up with No. 6 Chad Walsh of Rider. The two had met previously in a Keystone final, Bethea scoring a 10-8 win in overtime at 157 in 2015. This match was another close encounter, with the final score in Walsh's favor at 6-2. Bethea trailed, 3-0, after two periods but connected on a takedown to open the third. He cut Walsh loose to concede a point and trail, 4-2. In the final seconds, Bethea shot in on a takedown attempt to try and force overtime but Walsh circled for an insurance takedown.
Joe Velliquette matched up with returning NCAA champion Jason Nolf at 157 pounds after a win over Rider's No. 8 B.J. Clagon in the semifinals. Velliquette gave no inch to the returning champ, initiating offense and scrambling with Nolf when possible. In the end, Nolf was able to score a fall at 5:39 for the win.
The Quakers had two placewinners at 157, with
Jon Errico finishing fourth. Errico was 3-2 for the day, losing to Nolf in the second round before winning twice to reach the third place bout.
