Men's Basketball Cruises to Record Win over PSU-Brandywine

Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team jumped out to a quick start and was never threatened by Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, defeating the Nittany Lions 99-40 at The Palestra. The 59-point margin of victory was the largest in program history, surpassing an 87-36 victory over Cornell on February 1, 1974.

Unlike the last time Penn played a non-Division 1 team, when the Quakers scuffled to a seven-point win over Ursinus two years ago, the Red and Blue put the foot on the gas from the start on Saturday and never let up in earning their second-straight win.

Brandywine fell to 0-2 on the young season.

Notes
*Penn's 99 points in the game were a high since the Quakers scored 105 in a 105-73 win over Lafayette on January 18, 2006.

*This was Penn's third time scoring at least 90 points in a game in the Steve Donahue coaching era. The other came on February 13, 2016 (92 at Cornell) and February 17, 2017 (96 at Brown).

*Penn's 56 first-half points were a high in the Donahue era and matched the most points by the Quakers in a half since they had 56 in the second half on February 13, 2016 at Cornell.

*For the second time this season, Penn took 39 three-point shots which is a program record for a game. The Quakers made 15, which was one shy of the team record and a high in the Donahue era.

*Penn had 27 assists on its 34 baskets; the 27 assists are a high in the Donahue era, and the 34 buckets tie a high set originally against Brown last February 17.

*No player on the Penn roster played more than 15 minutes, and 15 of the 18 players who got into the game scored.

*Three days after holding Navy to 16 first-half points, Penn held Brandywine to just 17 points in the opening period on Saturday.

*For the third time in four games so far this season, Penn had a single-digit turnover total (8).

*Freshman Jarrod Simmons not only scored his first collegiate points on Saturday, he had 14 by halftime and finished the day with 16. He became the 13th different player on the Penn roster to reach double figures in the scoring column in a game in their Quakers career.

*Senior Darnell Foreman had 14 points, his third double-figure scoring game of the season. He also had four assists, tied with Devon Goodman for the team high.

*Sophomore Jakub Mijakowski scored his first career points on a three-pointer in the second half and ended the game with eight points and six rebounds.

*Sophomore Zack Kaminsky also scored his first collegiate point, on a free throw.

*Sophomore Ryan Betley had his 11-game streak of double-figure scoring games snapped, as he finished with nine points in just 15 minutes of action.

How It Happened
Penn hit five of its first six shots, with four of them coming from beyond the arc, and the Nittany Lions could only respond with one trey as the Quakers jumped out to a 14-3 lead and forced a Brandywine timeout.

The drama was taken out of this game midway through the period, when Penn went on an 18-0 run that pushed its lead to 40-7. The Brandywine scoring drought covered nearly six minutes before Terrance Brown hit a layup. The Nittany Lions were able to get the offense going a bit after that, but led by Simmons the Quakers were comfortably up at the half, 56-17.

Penn's lead was 50 points at 72-22 with 14 minutes still to play, and kept growing as Coach Donahue substituted his bench liberally.

Up Next
Penn heads to Florida to participate in the eight-team Gulf Coast Showcase. The Quakers will play Northern Illinois in a first-round game on Monday at 5 p.m. The Gulf Coast Showcase is taking place at the Germain Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.
