NEW YORK, N.Y. - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team held its own against one of the most potent front lines in the Ivy League Friday night, but ultimately fell in the second overtime period to Columbia, 1-0. Goalkeeper
Kitty Qu posted one of her most impressive nights in goal all season, registering a season-high 11 saves in net - including a remarkable leaping save in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*
Paige Howard got things going for the Quakers early, registering a shot in the second minute that was met by a save from Columbia's Sophie Whitehouse.
*In 12th minute,
Kitty Qu made an incredible leaping save on a shot from 20 yards out headed for the upper 90 on the far post. The sophomore took a step to set herself then laid out to flick the offering wide of the net.
*
Camillia Nwokedi set up a scoring opporunity in the 38th minute when she served a ball in front of the box to
Emma Loving. Loving then beat a pair of defenders at the top of the box, but was met with a hard tackle inside the box on her way to the goal as Columbia took back possession.
*In the closing seconds of the first half, Columbia advanced the ball to the goal, but Qu was there to corral a header attempt on goal – her fifth save of an eventful first 45 minutes.
*Following halftime in the 64th minute, Columbia had its best opportunity to take the lead when a shot ricocheted off the crossbar to about six yards in front of the net, where a Lions defender was there to head the rebound towards the goal. Qu quickly turned and dove on the ball while also managing to turn her body away from the goal line to save Penn yet again from going down a score.
*With 37 seconds remaining in regulation, Columbia's Amaris Hemmings drove the ball down the right side and had a go on the far post from just outside the box, but her shot wound up just wide as the two sides headed to overtime.
*After a scoreless ten minutes in the first overtime, Columbia's Emma Anderson was able to break free from the Penn back line and deliver the golden goal in the 105th minute, lifting the Lions to the 1-0 win.
