Higa's Heroics Lift Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win Over Dartmouth

PHILADELPHIA - Erica Higa's golden goal in the first overtime period sent the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team into a frenzy Saturday night at Rhodes Field, as the Quakers picked up three crucial points in the 1-0 win over Dartmouth. The result brings Penn even with Yale in the Ivy League standings at seven points each with three matches remaining in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*The match began with plenty of play in the midfield from both sides, until Dartmouth (6-8, 0-4 Ivy) broke through with a lengthy possession in the Penn third. In the 19th minute, the Big Green drove the ball deep down the right side and got off a cross into the middle, but goalkeeper Kitty Qu was there to squash the attempt by diving on top of the ball.

*In the 31st minute, Dartmouth had one of its best opportunities on goal when Bianca Ribi got behind the Penn back line, but Qu was there yet again to make her second of six saves on the night en route to her fifth overall shutout of the season and third in conference play.

*The Quakers came out strong in the second half and controlled the ball for a majority of the first 15 minutes. In the 66th minute, Katharine Larson attempted to play a ball into the middle but was blocked - landing right on the foot of Jadyn Wilensky who fired a shot from 20 yards out that sailed just over the far post.

*Despite a pair of corners and a flurry of shots from Dartmouth in the closing minutes, Qu and the Quaker defense stood tall as the two sides completed a scoreless regulation.

*The first overtime period was all Penn, beginning with Allie Trzaska's mere miss from 20 yards out following a deflected Emily Sands shot. Trzaska's right-footed chance caromed off the crossbar on the far post and landed over the net.

*After regaining possession in the 98th minute, Larson took the ball down the left side and found Kristen Miller on the edge who took it into the corner. Miller then offered a beautiful left-footed cross into the middle that Higa timed perfectly, sending her volley over the head of the keeper for the game-winner as the Quaker bench stormed the field.

*Higa's game-winner provided Penn with its first win in extra time this season, and was her second game-winning goal of the year (Delaware, 9/11). Satuday's win was also the first home overtime victory since September 2014 against Old Dominion.
