Crews Win Six Divisions at Head of the Schuylkill

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight and women's rowing teams had solid performances Saturday at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, earning first-place finishes in six different divisions. The women took first place in the Pairs without Cox, the Frosh/Novice 4+, the Club Championship 8+, and the Women's Championship 8+. The heavies, meanwhile, earned first in the College Frosh/Novice 4+ and the Championship 4+.
 
The Head of the Schuylkill is a three-mile, head-style regatta.
 
Women's Championship Pairs w/o Cox (8:30 a.m.)
Penn got the day started by sweeping the top two spots in this 21-boat division, as Sarah Brunsberg and Regina Salmons teamed up for first place in 16:45.948 while Frances Kane and Natasha Wood combined for second in 17:10.861.
 
Men's College Frosh/Novice 4+ (8:50 a.m.)
Penn was first among 16 boats in this field, clocking 14:49.898 which had them four seconds better than second-place Coast Guard Academy (16:03.964).
 
Womens' College Frosh/Novice 4+ (9:05 a.m.)
Penn won this division with a time of 16:26.618, which was well ahead of the 21-boat field as second-place Villanova was clocked in 17:05.387.
 
Men's Championship 4+ (10:15 a.m.)
Penn had four boats in this 36-boat division and dominated, taking four of the top five spots including first, second and third. The Quakers' first-place boat clocked 14:03.467, while the second-place boat was timed in 14:14.785 and the third-place boat crossed the finish line in 14:24.474. Saint Joseph's had the fourth-place boat, and then Penn's final boat was fifth in 14:37.114.
 
Women's Championship 4+ (10:35 a.m.)
A total of 41 boats competed in this division, including three from Penn. The Quakers' A boat took second place overall, in 16:25.434, while the B boat was third in 16:27.180. They were behind only the University of Delaware, which won the division in 16:11.482. Penn's C boat was 24th in the field, at 18:25.940.
 
Men's Club Championship 8+ (1:40 p.m.)
Penn was second in this 38-boat division, as the Quakers clocked 13:37.910 which was behind only Drexel (13:28.074).
 
Women's Club Championship 8+ (1:55 p.m.)
Penn took first place here, as well, clocking 15:26.279 which was more than 13 seconds ahead of second-place Hamilton College (15:39.997). The Quakers' B boat was sixth in a division that saw 43 boats compete, clocking 16:09.518.
 
Men's Championship 8+ (3:30 p.m.)
Penn had the fastest time of any college boat in this 12-boat field, as the Quakers clocked 13:02.130. That was second overall, behind only the USRowing Training Center which finished in 12:42.385.
 
Women's Championship 8+ (3:50 p.m.)
Penn's A boat competed in this 11-boat field and took the title, clocking 15:04.813 over the three-mile course. UConn was second, in 15:12.435.
