PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team kept a high-powered Brown offense in check all afternoon - led by goalkeeper
Kitty Qu's game-high nine saves - until Star White's 94th minute goal in the first overtime period ultimately downed the Quakers Saturday, 1-0.
Emily Sands registered a team-high four shots in Penn's first loss in just over three weeks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*Brown took control of the first possession of the afternoon and wasted no time in getting its opportunities on net early, regestering two shots on goal in the first five minutes. Despite the strong offensive start Qu was there to make three saves on the Bears' first five shots of the match.
*In the 33rd minute, Brown's Katy Schmidt had a quality chance on goal, but Qu was there to make the stop with a diving save to keep the hosts off the board.
*The Quakers had their opportunities in the closing minutes of the first half as
Sasha Stephens lined up two Penn corner kicks in the 44th minute, resulting in Sands' shot being saved by Christine Etzel to send the match to halftime scoreless.
*Sands,
Erica Higa and
Allie Trzaska opened the first ten minutes of the second half with shots on goal that could not quite find the back of the net as Penn rotated players in and out to the game in an attempt to create more scoring opportunities. In the 66th minute following a
Katharine Larson shot on goal, Brown's Abby Carchio fired a shot on goal from 25 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar and out of play.
*With under two minutes left in regulation, Brown's Sydney Cummings had a deflected shot land in front of her, and had a go from 35 yards out that hit squarely off the crossbar, sending the two sides to overtime.
*In the 93rd minute, Sands attempted a game-winner that went just wide, resulting in a Brown counter-attack that ended with Star White's chip-in from eight yards out that landed over the head of Qu on the far post for the 1-0 win.
