Football Returns To Franklin Field Saturday vs. Yale

Setbacks only pave the way for comebacks. The Quakers enter today's game in search of their first Ivy League win of the season after back-to-back losses on the game's final play. The Red and Blue know their margin for error is miniscule if they want to stay in the title hunt, and have their eyes set on knocking off a Yale team coming off a late loss of their own in their most recent Ivy tilt.

The Penn-Yale Series—85th Meeting
The Quakers have won the last two meetings between the two teams — each a win in a nationally-televised Friday night game. Last year, Justin Watson had 166 yards receiving and three touchdowns as the Red and Blue went into the Yale Bowl and scored their most points in New Haven since 1993 in a 42-7 romp.

Out Of Mulligans
The Quakers are 0-2 in Ivy League play for the first time since 1996, and will need to come from off the pace to re-enter the title picture. The last time a team with two losses earned a piece of an Ivy championship was 1982 when the Quakers joined Harvard and Dartmouth at 5-2 atop the Ivy standings. Before that, you have to go back to 1963 the only other time teams with two losses won Ivy titles. No team with three losses has ever won an Ivy title.

#JWatch
Senior wide receiver Justin Watson enters today's game tied for the Ivy League record for career 100-yard games with 15. Two of those 100-yard games have come against Yale. He is also tied for No. 2 all-time in career receiving touchdowns by a Quaker with 26. He is one receiving TD away from tying Dan Castles '05 for the Penn record and two from becoming the all-time leader. Watson has at least one receiving TD in each game this season — that's a career-long streak for Watson and one away from tying the program record of six set by Castles over the 2003-04 seasons.

A Look at Yale
A year removed from a 3-7 record, Yale has already surpassed its win total from 2016 with four victories midway through the season. The Bulldogs are averaging 222.6 yards rushing per game, and rank No. 5 in all of FCS football in Scoring Offense at 41.0 points per game. The high scoring offense and tough defense — Yale ranks No. 18 in the country in Scoring Defense at 18.0 points per game — has allowed the turnaround to happen. The Bulldogs are running the ball extremely well — they boast the No. 3 and No. 4 rushers among all Ivy players in Zane Dudek (448 yards) and Deshawn Salter (407 yards). Each of those running backs has scored seven touchdowns.

Miller Time
Junior linebacker Nick Miller has had 10+ tackles in all five games this season, including a career-high 13 at CCSU. He has recorded 10+ tackles in six of his last seven games dating back to last season. His 13 tackles against the Blue Devils were the most since Colton Moskal also had 13 at Princeton last season.

A Noble Effort
Freshman Jared Noble is this year's newcomer who is making noise on defense. After seeing special teams duty in the season opener, Noble has played cornerback ever since and has moved into the starting lineup. He has 23 tackles over his last four games, including 11 at CCSU. Noble also blocked a PAT attempt at Lehigh.

Lucky Lukas
Lukas Sontich entered the CCSU game with just six tackles over three games. Against the Blue Devils, he was in on what seemed like every play — finishing the game with 11 assisted tackles, including 0.5 TFLs. His 17 tackles this season are a career-high.

Soslow Goes High
Junior kicker Jack Soslow is 3-for-4 on field goals, this season, connecting twice against Dartmouth for the first two makes of his career. He is 23-for-23 on PAT attempts, including a 9-for-9 day at Lehigh which tied the Penn program record for made PATs in a game — last done in 1921.

Louis, Louis
Senior defensive lineman Louis Vecchio has batted down four balls at the line of scrimmage this season The one game where he didn't disrupt a pass was against Dartmouth — a game where he had one sack and two quarterback hurries. He leads the Red and Blue with 3.5 TFLs this season.

Snap To It
The Quakers have had the benefit of continuity of late at the snapper positions. Senior Zach O'Leary has played in all 35 career games as the snapper on field goals while junior Carson Vey has played all 25 games in the punting game.

Rushing Up The Charts
Karekin Brooks' 586 rushing yards through four games is already No. 9 among Penn rushers since 2003. He is averaging 7.51 yards per carry this season. The Penn record among qualifying players is 6.15 yards-per-carry set by Chris Flynn in 1986. The Ivy League record is 7.80 set by Brown's John Spooney in 2013.

Hunter The Punter
Senior Hunter Kelley has been the starting punter for all 35 of his career games. He has punted 139 times for 5,535 yards — averaging 39.8 yards per punt which ranks No. 12 all-time among Ivy punters entering today's game.

Sharp Is On Point
Tight end Logan Sharp had three catches through three games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. This year, he already has four catches and a career-high 76 yards, including a 26-yards touchdown reception at Lehigh.

Touching Down On The Touchdown List
Justin Watson has seven receiving touchdowns through five games this season — two away from tying his caree-high for a single season and alread No. 7 all-time in a single season by a Quaker. 2017 is the third year in a row Watson has scored 7+ receiving touchdowns — something no other player in program history has accomplished.

Watson Climbs All-Time Scoring List
Among players who call wide receiver their primary position, Justin Watson has already set Penn's career scoring record with 164 points on 26 receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and a 2-point conversion. That total ranks No. 12 all-time by any Penn player and No. 7 among non-kickers. He is six points away from tying for No. 9 all-time (170; Jeremiah Greathouse, 1995-97) and 10 points away from tying for No. 8 (174; Joe Sandberg, 2005-07)
