Field Hockey Bested By Columbia, 2-0

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Two first half goals for Columbia made the difference as the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team (5-6, 2-2) fell to the Lions (7-5, 3-1) 2-0 on Friday night in New York City. The contest marked another chapter in the fierce rivalry between the two sides as four of the last six meetings have needed overtime to decide a winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Quakers came out strong in the opening minutes and controlled possession in the early goings. Neither team had serious threats at net in the first half of the stanza as solid defense kept attacking at bay.

*The Lions struck first towards the latter half of the frame in the 29th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Meghan Fahey knocked in a cross from Danielle Buttinger in the center of the circle to sneak past the Quaker defense.

*Just five minutes later, Columbia put in their second tally of the half to pull ahead 2-0. Jennifer Trieschman notched her fifth goal of the season as the Lions took the advantage into halftime.

*Penn looked to rally in the second half and Alexa Hoover led the way in the 37th minute when she ripped a shot from the top of the circle. The Quaker registered a few shots that sailed just wide of the posts as the Red and Blue put plenty of pressure of the Lions in the second half.

*With time winding down, Penn pulled Rosati and added an extra attacker to try to create additional scoring opportunities. With Paige Meily in as a kicking back, the Quakers pushed the ball forward to try and create more chances in their attacking third.

*Despite the efforts, Penn couldn't find the equalizer as they fell on Friday night in NYC. With the defeat, Penn moved to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the Ancient Eight.

*The Quakers held a 16-11 advantage in shots for the day and a 7-3 lead in corners. On the defensive end, Rosati tallied four saves while Columbia's Katie Dempsey had seven in the win.
