Penn-Brown Box Score (PDF)
PHILADELPHIA – For the second consecutive game, a cold night from the field
doomed the University of Pennsylvania's men's basketball team. This time, it resulted in an 82-70 loss
to Brown on Saturday night in The Palestra, moving the Quakers to 0-3 in the Ivy League this season.
Numbers of Note
*Junior Darnell Foreman poured in 19 points, the second time in three games he has set a career high in that category (he had 17 last Saturday at Princeton). The junior guard made five
of his nine shots from the field and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
*After struggling in Penn's first two Ivy games, senior Matt Howard bounced
back with a team-high 20 points, finishing 8-of-15 from the field, and he also tied a career high with four assists.
*Freshman AJ Brodeur finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and tied a season/career high with four blocked shots. The freshman has recorded
double-digit point totals in 12 games this season.
*As a team, the Quakers
registered a season-high seven blocks.
*Penn recorded its
lowest three-point shooting percentage of the season, making just 4-of-19 (21
percent) from beyond the arc. Jackson Donahue knocked in two of his eight attempts.
*The Red and Blue
made a season-best 16 free throws, finishing the night by shooting 84 percent
from the line; however, Brown -- which entered the game third nationally in made free throws -- knocked down 24-of-26 (92 percent) from the charity stripe.
How it Happened
In a back and forth
first half, it was Howard and Brodeur that provided the majority of Penn's
offense. The duo combined for 19 of Penn's first 21 points, but a lack of
supporting cast provided an opening for Brown. The Bears used an 11-0 run
mid-way through the first half to capture a 26-18 lead.
Sam Jones and Foreman
supplied a respite for Howard and Brodeur toward the end of the
first half. Jones knocked in a three-pointer to cut the Brown lead to 28-24, while
Foreman scored Penn's final seven points of the half. The junior's lay-up as time
expired trimmed the Bears' edge to just 36-31.
Although Penn
found some rhythm offensively in the second half, the Quakers had trouble
stringing together stops. Brown scored on five consecutive possessions to open
up a 55-45 lead. It was once again Howard and Brodeur keeping the home team in
it. Howard put in back-to-back buckets to trim the lead to 48-43. Penn inched
within four, 55-51, on a straight-away three-pointer from Donahue, but Brown
quickly answered with its own three-point play. Penn cut the Brown lead to just
two points on a pair of occasions—once on a three-ball from Donahue, the
other on a lay-in from Max Rothschild—but was never able to tie or
take a lead.
The Quakers
wavered down the stretch, making just two of their final nine shots from the
field. At the other end, the Bears knocked in six of their last seven shots, finishing the game on a 20-10 run.
Over the last 3:43 of the second half, Penn was able to muster just two field
goals and six free throws.
