Penn-Yale Box Score (PDF)
PHILADELPHIA – The University of
Pennsylvania's women's basketball team shot a season-high 52 percent from the field on Friday night, en route to a 66-55 win over Yale in The Palestra. The Quakers move to 2-0 in the Ivy League, and 8-4 overall.
Inside the Numbers
The Quakers showed off a balanced attack with six players scoring at least eight points. Sydney Stipanovich led the way with a team-best 13 points, to go along with 10 rebounds. Kasey Chambers and Michelle Nwokedi followed suit in double figures, each putting in 11. Nwokedi also added eight rebounds and seven assists.
Anna Ross and Lauren Whitlatch also produced matching lines with nine points apiece. Princess Aghayere rounded out the Quaker attack with eight points off the bench.
As a team, the Quakers made 27 of their 52 shots from the floor, including 9-of-18 from beyond the three-point line.
How it Happened
It was the duo of
Nwokedi and Stipanovich that led the way in the first quarter. The twin towers
combined for the Quakers' first eight points, including a Stipanovich jumper
that put Penn up 6-2. As Yale hung tough, it was Penn's outside shooting that
provided the Red and Blue a lead after one. Back-to-back three-pointers from
Phoebe Sterba and Anna Ross lifted the Quakers to a 14-13 edge at the first
horn.
Penn extended its
lead in the second quarter thanks to stellar play from its bench. Princess
Agyahere was especially productive, putting in a pair of buckets to give Penn a
21-18 advantage. Following a lay-in from Beth Brzozowski, the freshman struck
again to put the Quakers up 27-18. A five-point run from Ross provided Penn its
largest lead of the half, 32-21, with 3:06 left in the half. The 11-point edge,
however, would shrink down to just seven at the break after Yale scored the
final four points of the half.
Penn's scoring drought wouldn't last long in the second half. In fact, it took
just 54 seconds for Kasey Chambers and Lauren Whitlatch to make consecutive
three-pointers and provide a 38-25 lead. Whitlatch struck again two more times in
the frame, the latter putting the Quakers back up 47-31.
Holding a 53-34 advantage to begin the final frame, the Red and Blue coasted to the finish line. Stipanovich once again came alive, scoring six in a row to give Penn a 59-45 lead. Chambers knocked in her third three-pointer of the game to nab a 64-47 edge.
