HOW IT HAPPENED
The duel began at a rapid pace, and both Penn and Brown flew up and down the court looking to score early and often. The teams traded leads in the early going before the Quakers seized momentum to end the period, ending the first frame on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from
Beth Brzozowski. The shot gave Penn a 25-18 lead, its largest of the contest at the time as the Red and Blue shot over 61 percent from the field in the opening quarter.
The Bears fought back in the second, eventually tying the game at 30-all before the Quakers ended the half on a tear. A jumper from Ross and an and-one from Stipanovich helped spur the home team before a three from
Ashley Russell capped a 10-0 run for Penn. The defense for the Quakers stiffened up, holding Brown scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes. Penn ended the first half with a hook shot from
Princess Aghayere followed by a jumper from Kasey Chambers to grab a 44-32 halftime advantage, ending the period on a 14-2 run.
Penn capitalized on its momentum to begin the second;
Lauren Whitlatch scored her first points of the evening on a three, before Stipanovich found the bottom of the net yet again to make it 52-36 in advantage of the home team. Brown went on a mini 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 11, but the Quakers responded with a 7-2 run of its own to regain some breathing room. The third quarter was highlighted by the first-ever three-point shot attempt and make from Aghayere as Penn found itself ahead by 18 to end the frame.
Penn closed the door on the Bears with three three-pointers to end the contest, one each from Chambers,
Deja Jackson and
Phoebe Sterba. 10 Quakers finished with points on the scoreline as the Red and Blue shot 34-of-61 from the floor including an even 13-of-26 from beyond-the-arc.
