PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team got off to a fast start and didn't let off the gas until late on Saturday at Franklin Field, rolling past Franklin Pierce, 51-7.

This one was never in doubt; the Quakers were up 21-0 after one quarter, 41-0 at the half, and had a 51-0 lead in the third quarter before Franklin Pierce finally scored.

Freshman Max Jones had 125 yards rushing in the first half and ended the game with 130. Mike McCurdy completed 12 of 21 passes for 211 yards and tossed three touchdown passes, while also running for one. Henry Mason had five receptions for 109 yards and caught two of those TD passes.

Penn's opening drive came down to a 4th-and-2, and after a timeout the Quakers ran a read-option play that ended with McCurdy slicing through the FPU defense for a 23-yard score. After a defensive stop, the Red and Blue scored again as Jones finished off a six-play, 51-yard drive with a 20-yard scamper.

Stu Helgeson made it 21-0 before the quarter ended, intercepting a Franklin Pierce pass and taking it to the house from 39 yards out.

Jones scored his second TD of the day early in the second quarter, running untouched through the middle of the defense for a 65-yard rush. Penn put this one to bed late in the half, McCurdy throwing TD tosses to Jones and then Mason in the final 3:20.

Mario Del Cueto hit a field goal early in the third quarter, and then McCurdy capped his day by hitting a wide-open Mason for a 35-yard score. All that happened before Franklin Pierce finally made its mark on the scoreboard.

Penn will return to action next Saturday, traveling to Connecticut to take on Post University. Kickoff for that game is slated for noon.
