Field Hockey Routs Lehigh, 9-1, in Season Opener

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – It was a season opening scoring barrage for the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team Friday afternoon, as the Quakers rolled Lehigh, 9-1, at Ellen Vagelos Field.

The nine goals for Penn set a new scoring mark under head coach Colleen Fink. The Quakers scored seven goals twice last season in wins over Pacific and Appalachian State. The nine goals is also the second most goals in a game in Penn's history. The Red and Blue scored 10 goals in a, 10-1, victory over Cornell in 1987.

Emily Corcoran and freshman Alexa Hoover – making her collegiate debut – both recorded hat tricks to lead the Quakers scoring. It was the first time the senior captain Corcoran had recorded three goals in a game.

With a methodical pace to begin the game for both teams, in the 22nd minute junior Elizabeth Hitti found the back of the net and put the Quakers up 1-0 over the Mountain Hawks (0-3). Penn wouldn't look back, with Hoover sandwiching her first and second career goals with the Red and Blue around the only Lehigh goal of the game.

Leading 3-1 at halftime, Penn (1-0) tallied two quick goals, one by senior captain Alex Iqbal, along with Corcoran's first of the game. Hoover would go on to collect her third goal almost 13 minutes into the second half, and added an assist, feeding Corcoran for her second goal of the contest. Corcoran rounded out her hat trick, scoring in the 65th minute of the game.

Lehigh found a tough time on the offensive end, managing only nine shots on the afternoon, against Penn's 26 attempts. Quaker goalkeeper Allison Weisenfels made three saves in the game.

Also scoring in her collegiate debut was freshman Rachel Huang, who scored her first Penn goal with a little over five minutes remaining in the game.

The Quakers return to action on Sunday as they welcome Bucknell (1-1) to Ellen Vagelos Field. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
