Field Hockey Outlasts Brown, 2-1, on Senior Day

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team celebrated its six seniors and an Ivy victory, defeating Brown 2-1 on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field.

With continuous rainfall before and during the contest, Penn's six seniors – Helene Caniglia, Katherine Cook, Emily Corcoran, MaryRose Croddick, Alex Iqbal, and Allison Weisenfels – were honored before the game for their hard work and dedication to the field hockey program over the last four years.

Once the game was underway, it didn't take long for either team to find its footing on the wet turf as Penn and Brown both scored less than five minutes into the first period.

Allowing only the early goal, senior Allison Weisenfels put together her finest performance of the season, making a career high 15 saves, including nine in the second half with Penn leading by only a goal.

The Quakers (8-7, 3-3 Ivy) struck first in the game, when junior Elizabeth Hitti ripped a shot from the left side into the far right corner making it 1-0. Just under a minute later, Brown (9-6, 1-5 Ivy) sophomore Lucy Green tied the game, on a pass from junior Emily Arciero, off a Bears penalty corner play.

Penn's deciding goal also came in the first half, almost halfway through the period, on a Red and Blue penalty corner. Senior Alex Iqbal passed up a shot at the top of the circle to find sophomore Elise Tilton for a tap in goal on the right side of the net.

The Quaker goals were Hitti's seventh, and Tilton's fourth of the season.

Despite no scoring in the second half, there was plenty of action, mostly on the offensive side for the Bears as they recorded 11 of their 19 total shots in the second period – including nine shots on goal. Penn recorded just one shot on goal and six total shots in the final period.

Moving right along in the final portion of the regular season schedule, Penn travels to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats for the game are available by clicking here.
